Recently, former NBA player Etan Thomas wrote about how some fans root for Caitlin Clark simply because of her race. The article sparked quite a bit of discourse, with many Caitlin Clark fans vehemently disagreeing, and other WNBA fans defending both Thomas and his take.
During a recent episode of "The Rematch Show," Thomas and Chuck Modi welcomed Monica McNutt, who weighed in on the situation, saying that she doesn't think it would be wrong for someone to cheer for Clark because of her race.
However, despite that, she seemed to agree with the notion that there are, in fact, some fans who may support Clark for the wrong reasons.
"Rooting for Caitlin Clark just because she's white - is that wrong?
"I don't know that I would consider that wrong, but I do think I would agree with you that folks need to be honest about why they're there, because I will say like, 'I'm rooting for everybody black,' like, I get it."
Amid the discourse, Clark hasn't been playing. In the Indiana Fever's May 24 loss to the New York Liberty, she suffered a quad injury that has forced her to the sidelines ever since.
Looking at the latest news surrounding Caitlin Clark ahead of tonight's game against the Atlanta Dream
After missing the Indiana Fever's past four games with a quad injury, Caitlin Clark has been ruled out for Tuesday's game between the Indiana Fever and the Atlanta Dream.
The news comes on the heels of Clark indicating that she was nearing a return, leading up to Saturday's game between the Fever and the Sky. After re-evaluation, however, it sounds as though fans will have to wait a bit longer to see the 2024 All-Star back on the court.
While speaking to members of the press on Monday following practice, Fever coach Stephanie White poured cold water on optimism surrounding Clark's return. She explained that getting back to doing drills in practice and being ready for a game are two entirely different things.
"It's one thing to do some shooting drills. It's another thing to get out there on the floor, get into movement patterns, rhythm, timing."
As the Fever have shown both with Clark's injury and Sophie Cunningham's injury to start the season, they're willing to take things slow so as not to risk reaggravation of an injury.
