Phoenix Mercury forward Satou Sabally didn’t hold back on Saturday as she publicly called out WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert over the league’s expanded schedule for the 2025 season. Speaking candidly after the Mercury’s 89-77 loss to the Seattle Storm, Sabally, who also serves as a WNBPA player representative, voiced strong criticism of the decision to add more games.

Sabally directly questioned the league’s leadership for prioritizing expansion over player well-being. She also emphasized that WNBA athletes deserve to be treated as professionals, not expected to compete at a high level every other day without adequate recovery.

"This is a conversation that could also be important for the next CBA. Cathy (Engelbert) added a lot of games... We put our bodies on the line every single time. We had 9 games in 18 days. It’s not really responsible for a commissioner," Sabally said.

"Treat professionals as professionals. But also the league being able to work together and players, and not just throw them out there."

Satou Sabally's frustration stems from the grueling schedule the Phoenix Mercury have endured since the season tipped off on May 16. Phoenix has played a league-high 10 games in that span, often hitting the court every other day, leaving little time for rest and recovery.

Satou Sabally has shown tremendous growth this season

Satou Sabally has been playing at an elite level since the start of the 2025 WNBA season. Despite the Phoenix Mercury’s loss on Saturday, the star forward delivered another strong outing, finishing with 22 points, five rebounds and six assists while shooting 7 of 20 from the field.

Sabally also reflected on her development this season, embracing her role as the team’s leader in the absence of Kahleah Copper and others. Her consistent performances have been a driving force behind the Mercury’s impressive 6-4 record through 10 games.

"Win or loss I always win because I feel like I’m taking something out of this game," Sabally said.

As for her season stats, Sabally is averaging an impressive 20.5 points per game while shooting 39.9% from the field, including 25.0% from 3-point range. She's also contributing 7.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.7 steals per game, all while maintaining a solid +7 plus/minus rating.
