Seattle Storm star Skylar Diggins-Smith and her teammate Nneka Ogwumike have been enjoying the offseason with their families. For Thanksgiving, Ogwumike posted a video of herself dancing to Kendrick Lamar’s “Mustard!" while preparing dinner in the kitchen.
Diggins-Smith commented on the post with a curious remark, amid the ongoing offseason drama between the Storm players and the franchise.
“Chef Nek! What they talmbout,” Diggins-Smith wrote in the post’s comment section.
While it may seem like an innocent exchange between teammates on a special occasion, the comment comes amid an ongoing investigation into alleged player mistreatment by coach Noelle Quinn and her staff, with veterans Diggins-Smith and Ogwumike at the center of the drama.
The drama was amplified when Diggins-Smith and Ogwumike unfollowed teammate Jewell Floyd on social media, which hinted at a possible deeper issue within the team. These allegations surfaced weeks after the Storm's elimination from the 2024 WNBA playoffs' first round against the Las Vegas Aces.
Diggins-Smith was one of the stars in the Storm’s 2024 WNBA regular season campaign, as she averaged 15.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 1.7 steals per game. Meanwhile, Ogwumike recorded 16.7 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.9 steals per game, leading the Storm to a fifth-seed finish after posting a 25-15 win-loss slate.
Skylar Diggins-Smith reportedly had outbursts in practice
Skylar Diggins-Smith reportedly had several verbal outbursts during practice sessions with the Seattle Storm throughout the WNBA season. According to a report by Seattle Sports, the team did not view Diggins-Smith’s leadership style positively following these incidents.
"As the season developed, it was clear that Diggins-Smith’s style of leadership wasn’t held in high regard by most except the coaching staff," Christan Braswell wrote.
"According to multiple sources, Diggins-Smith led several outbursts laced with vulgarity during practices directed at teammates," he added.
Diggins-Smith also contributed to the drama with cryptic messages on her Instagram stories, quoting Kendrick Lamar’s hit “The Heart Part 4.”
"Don't tell a lie on me…," Diggins-Smith wrote in the first story.
"I won't tell the truth 'bout you," she added.
Diggins-Smith joined the team during the previous offseason, bringing a veteran presence to the squad.
This isn't the first time Diggins-Smith has been involved in team drama. During the 2022 season with the Phoenix Mercury, she got into a verbal exchange with legend Diana Taurasi during a time-out, which escalated to the point where their teammates had to intervene to prevent a physical altercation.
The team later downplayed the situation, saying that it was just a spur of emotions for both competitors.
