After Sultan, Salman Khan sets eyes on another wrestling project about Great Gama

What’s the story?

Bollywood icon Salman Khan is all set to produce a TV show on wrestling legend Gama Pahalwan, which will be his first television project as a producer.

A source close to proceedings said, “During Sultan’s research process, Salman really got into the wrestling scenario in India. That’s where he learned about Gama Pahalwan. Since then, he has been pushing for a show on these lines. We are currently doing the recce for this as it will shot during the post-partition era. Salman is huge sports lover and this production shows you why.”

In case you did know

Salman Khan is one of the most popular names in the Bollywood industry as an actor as well as a producer. Many of his films have gone on to become blockbusters on the box office, with the most recent ones Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Sultan earning a combined total of Rs 1200 crore together.

The heart of the matter

It will be Salman’s second project in wrestling after the film Sultan, where he co-starred with Anushka Sharma and played the role of a wrestler who goes on to become an MMA fighter.

He had reportedly wanted to make a film on the Great Gama a few years ago as well, but the plans didn’t materialize as actor John Abraham, who is also a co-owner of ISL side North East United FC, wanted to produce a similar project.

Ghulam Hussain, who is commonly known as the Great Gama or Gama Pahalwan, is a legendary wrestler from India, who remained undefeated in a career spanning over 52 years. He won the Indian version of the World Heavyweight Championship in 1910 and is among the greatest wrestlers of all time.

His training regimen is the stuff of legend and includes a daily routine of 5000 squats, 3000 pushups and a diet of 15 litres of milk daily. An exercise disk that weighs 95kg, used by him for squats, is on display at a museum in Patiala.

What’s next?

Salman is currently gearing up for the release of his next film Tubelight, which will hit theatres next month on June 25.

Author’s take

It is great news for wrestling as a sport in India as the sport will get coverage all over the country. With Sultan and Dangal, it has gained a lot of popularity among the people and a TV show, with Salman as a producer, will do well.
