Big blow to Narsingh Yadav's Olympic participation as WADA rejects clean chit given by NADA

Narsingh claimed that the entire episode was a conspiracy against him

In yet another twist to what is already a mind-boggling saga, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has rejected the NADA panel verdict which had cleared Narsingh Yadav of all doping charges, and has summoned the wrestler for a hearing on 18th August. The verdict will be out two hours before Narsingh is expected to open his campaign on August 19. The grappler's participation in the 74-kg category is not only doubtful but there is a chance of him facing a ban of 4 years.

The wrestler had tested positive for methandienone – a banned anabolic steroid, following which he cried foul, claiming that the entire episode was a conspiracy against him. He even filed a police complaint, naming two fellow grapplers, one of whom is a 17-year-old, as the perpetrators of the plot. Narsingh, who has alleged the involvement of his fellow competitors in the conspiracy, was replaced by Parveen Rana in the Olympic-bound squad only to be reinstated after getting a favourable verdict from NADA.

Although he managed to get the NADA and WFI backing in time to board the flight to Rio, it looks like he could well be grounded if WADA stops him from taking part. Asked if Narsingh will miss the Rio Olympics, BB Sharan Singh,WFI President said, "Hearing will be on 18 August, but we are confident as our case is strong."

Narsingh had secured the Olympic quota place for India after winning a bronze medal at the World Championship in Las Vegas last year. Since then, the grappler has been in the news after two-time Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar demanded that there should be a trial in 74kg category to decide who would go to Rio.

It is not quite clear what this means to India’s medal hopes. But the way he has won on the mat, the battle in the court and has gained the right to represent India, Narsingh certainly deserves better than this. It won’t be wrong to say that some ugly days await Indian wrestling.
