2017 Commonwealth Wrestling Championship: Indian women win medals in all weight categories

Indian contingent are in dominant form at the 2017 Commonwealth Wrestling Championship

The Indian women's contingent are in splendid form at the 2017 Commonwealth Wrestling Championship. The Indian women have fired in unison by winning a medal in each of the 10 weight categories. On the whole, they clinched nine gold, seven silver and four bronze medals on the second day of the competition in Johannesburg.

Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik gave a befitting spectacle of her prowess when she defeated New Zealand's Tayla Tuahine Ford by a score of 13-2 in the final of the 62 kg category. Alongside her, the Phogat clan also showcased their dominance in their respective categories. Ritu Phogat, Vinesh Phogat and Geeta Phogat all claimed gold while Sangeeta Phogat settled for the silver medal.

The 2017 edition of the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships are being held in South Africa and the Indian contingent comprises 60 wrestlers in total. The tournament commenced on Saturday with all the Greco-Roman fixtures scheduled for that day and the Freestyle bouts scheduled for Sunday.

The gold medal was claimed by Kiran (72 kg), Ritu Malik (65 kg) and Divya Kakran (68 kg) alongside a few others. The silver medallists included Pooja (76 kg) and Ravita (59 kg) while Kavita (76 kg) and Manu (72 kg) settled for the bronze.

This display of sheer might was carried forth on the next day by the freestyle wrestlers when Sakshi Malik led the way with her gold medal alongside Vinesh Phogat, Geeta Phogat and Ritu Phogat who also clinched gold in their respective categories.

It is indeed a moment of pride for the nation to see the women dominate what is a traditional Indian sport on the global stage. It will be an impetus to the young female wrestlers back home, for all of these women will serve as an essential role model post their successful exploits. Moreover, it has laid the basis for Indian domination in the international wrestling scenario with the men's contingent also adding to the medal tally in an equal measure.
