Roman Reigns has been at the centre of every WWE fan’s ire for the better part of two years. The former enforcer of the Shield has not been able to transfer the popularity he enjoyed during his time with the group into his singles career through no real fault of his own.
The WWE’s decision to push him into the stratosphere as the company’s next top face left most people disgruntled and despite Roman’s great physical and in-ring skills, his less than stellar work on the mic has added to the hate he receives.
Despite this apparent lack of mic skills, The Big Dog has taken numerous digs at UFC star, Conor McGregor, after the latter’s comments about the legitimacy of WWE wrestlers. This led everyone to question if Reigns could actually take on The Notorious One and how a fight between the two would go.
That’s not a debat worth getting into due to the sheer difference in weight, but what if Reigns took on MMA fighters more his own size? How would Reigns fare against them? My opinion? Not very well.
So, with that in mind, today we take a look at 5 MMA fighters who would destroy Roman Reigns:
#5 Anthony Johnson
Anthony Johnson is one scary dude. Don’t believe me? Take a look at his knockout punches, especially the one with which he took out Glover Texeira. After all, there is a reason Rumble holds the record for most sub-1 minute finishes in the UFC.
Such is the power of Johnson that even people such as Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones approach fights against him with a degree of caution. I reiterate, Rumble is one scary dude. With this in mind, Reigns better pray that he never gets into a fight with Johnson.
Looking at Roman’s tendency to eat a lot of shots and rely on his superior recovery power to come out victorious, it would be the perfect matchup for Johnson. If you take one big hit from Rumble, you aren’t getting back up, no matter who you are.
Stay far away from Rumble, Roman. Stay far away.
#4 Fabricio Werdum
One of the best heavyweight fighters of all time, Fabricio Werdum is an MMA legend. He is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, and Judo who is widely considered the best heavyweight grappler in the UFC today.
Werdum holds victories over every big fighter in the world including the likes of Cain Velasquez, Mark Hunt, Alistair Overeem, and most impressively, Fedor Emelianenko. Do not mess with this guy.
If for some reason Roman Reigns did decide to mess with Werdum, you can be rest assured of a systematic dismantling of The Big Dog. With a size to match Reigns, it would be a cakewalk for Werdum to just take control over Reigns with his vastly superior grappling power and make him tap.
#3 Yoel Romero
Yoel Romero is a freak of nature. How a man can get to that sort of muscle mass without taking steroids is well beyond me. But, I digress. Yoel Romero is also one of the most well rounded MMA fighters ever.
He is an Olympic-level wrestler who picked up an Olympic medal representing Cuba. He is a dangerous striker as evidenced by his decimation of Chris Weidman at UFC 205. He has all the tools needed to step up to someone like Roman Reigns and take him out.
With an advantage in speed, power, grappling, and striking, there is no way Reigns is winning a fight against The Soldier of God.
#2) Daniel Cormier
Daniel Cormier’s claim to fame in the UFC is being one of the very best amateur wrestlers on the roster. He is one of the most impressive light heavyweights of all time and is the current reigning UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. DC also happens to be a massive fan of pro-wrestling, the WWE, and Seth Rollins – Roman Reigns’ old buddy from the Shield.
With Cormier’s amateur wrestling background it isn’t hard to imagine him ripping Roman to shreds on the mat. The reason I brought up DC’s interest in the WWE is because regardless of whether it’s a pro-wrestling contest or an MMA one, Corimer would lay Roman out.
For all those who wished they could see Kurt Angle take out Reigns, this would probably the next best thing.
#1 Brock Lesnar
And, finally we come to a man who has already decimanted Roman Reigns inside the squared circle – Brock Lesnar. The Beast Incarnate would be the one man who can take out The Big Dog with the least amount of problems just because of his background.
And extremely accomplished mixed martial artist who has held the UFC Heavweight Title as well as an accoplished pro-wrestler and amateur wrestler with the body of a genetic freak, there is absolutely no area in which Reigns is remotely close to Lesnar.
If Roman ever wants to get his backside kicked, all he has to do is get in a fight with Lesnar.
