Amid defensive shortcomings in the infield for the New York Yankees, Anthony Volpe made a mind-blowing play to secure a 6-4 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday.

A close game on Wednesday saw a four-run ninth inning helping Yankees take a 6-4 lead entering second half of the inning. For the last out, Clay Holmes was pitching to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. with one man on second base.

Guerrero barreled Holmes' 2-2 pitch straight to the right of second base, heading to the outfield. However, Volpe, who was stationed at shortstop, not only fielded the ball inside but also made a long throw towards first base to catch Guerrero short, ending the ball game.

With the result, the Yankees improved to 13-6 while the Blue Jays dropped to 10-9. Despite the loss in the third game of the series, the Blue Jays won the first two games. The Yankees will host the Tampa Bay Rays in a three-game series starting on Friday.

Yankees late-inning surge helped topple Blue Jays 6-4

The Blue Jays entered Wednesday's game with an opportunity to sweep the Yankees, following wins in the first two games. They were on pace to get there until a clutch ninth inning from Yankees hitters, where they scored four runs, which helped them edge out a close deal.

Giancarlo Stanton started off the ninth with a home run to left center field to get within one run of Blue Jays' lead. This was followed by a single from Gleyber Torres and a double from Alex Verdugo to load the bases in scoring positions.

Jose Trevino singled to center field, allowing Torres to reach home and tie the game 4-4. Tim Mayza walked Juan Soto as Aaron Judge stepped on the plate with bases loaded.

He hit to the left field, allowing two men to score as the Yankees took a 6-4 lead, heading to the bottom of the ninth, where Clay Holmes took care of business from the mound.
