It was a day to remember at the plate for outfielder Daulton Varsho. The defense-first veteran showcased that he can do more than work with the glove on Wednesday, crushing not one but two home runs off the New York Yankees.

The 27-year-old came up clutch for the Toronto Blue Jays twice during their important American League East matchup against the New York Yankees. Daulton Varsho launched his third and fourth home runs of the season, helping the Jays take a 3-1 lead late in the game.

It was a difficult start to the season for the Toronto Blue Jays as the club dug themselves a hole in the standing. Although they have turned things on lately, it has not been the direct result of some of their biggest stars, instead, it has been some of their role players who have chipped in.

Entering Wednesday's matchup, the Toronto Blue Jays had been hot, winning seven of their last 10 games. This turnaround has been the result of players such as Justin Turner, Cavan Biggio, Davis Schneider, and Varsho, stepping up at the right moments.

Daulton Varsho will hope that Wednesday's two home run game will spark something at the plate

Although Varsho has been able to provide the Toronto Blue Jays with some clutch home runs, he has struggled with consistency so far this season. The hope for both the club and Varsho himself is that the two-home-run game against the New York Yankees will ignite him at the plate.

Thanks to his production on Wednesday, Varsho was able to bump his season-long batting average to .222. However, if the Toronto Blue Jays are hoping to make a deep playoff run this season, they will need Varsho to step up at the plate on a more consistent basis as his glove is invaluable to the club.

Varsho was traded to the Blue Jays last season in a blockbuster deal that saw Gabriel Moreno and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. moved to the Arizona Diamondbacks. He appeared in 158 games with Toronto last season, finishing the year with a .220 batting average with 20 home runs and 61 RBIs.
