Arjun Tendulkar smashes century in U-16 tournament in Mumbai

Arjun Tendulkar has huge shoes to fill – that of his father Sachin Tendulkar, Indian cricket’s highest God

The whole of the nation of India has sat up and taken notice of the feats accomplished by a 16-year-old in a junior Mumbai tournament on Tuesday – Arjun Tendulkar. The son of Sachin Tendulkar, Indian cricket’s highest God, Arjun, smashed a century in a fashion that has been compared to Yuvraj Singh.

Arjun scored 106 runs out of his team’s total of 218. He was turning out for Sunil Gavaskar XI against Rohit Sharma XI in Mumbai Cricket Association Under-16 Payyade Trophy 2015/16. This was the last match of the 4-team event which has been going on in November, a tournament also featuring Sachin Tendulkar XI and Dilip Vengsarkar XI.

The knock came about in Sachin Tendulkar Gymkhana Grounds – an unique occasion of a son scoring a century at a venue named after his father.

On course to his century, Arjun scored 48.6 % of the team’s total score, something which is strangely similar to his father’s one-man efforts for India in the 1990s.

Tendulkar Jr.’s past exploits

The 16-year-old Arjun, who the whole of India is impatiently waiting on to take on the mantle which his father carried for two and a half decades for Team India, has shown sparks of what he can do previously too.

A video during the Ashes showed him bowling against the English batsmen in the nets. Unlike his father though, Arjun Tendulkar bowled left-arm fast with a smooth run-up. He’s already impressed Wasim Akram who, in an interview during the Indian Premier League, labelled him a “passionate kid” and gave him tips on how take the ball away from right-handers.

He had also splashed across headlines after scoring 118 off just 42 balls for his school in a school cricket tournament recently as well.

Arjun’s father, Sachin, who the world acknowledges to be arguably the greatest cricketer ever, had taken up cricket at the age of eleven, been a ball boy at a World Cup at the age of fourteen, and had received a call-up to the Mumbai Ranji side later that year.

He had got to play his first game for Mumbai at the age of fifteen, and made his India debut at the age of sixteen.
