Before the start of the tour down under, let us go through a few numbers on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy:

1 - The first ever Border-Gavaskar series was played in the season 1996-97 in India. India won the 1-Test series 1-0. Out of the 11 series’ held, 6 have been won by India, 1 ending in a draw and 4 won by Australia.

10 - Billy Bowden of New Zealand has officiated the most number of matches (10), from 2003-10. He is followed by Aleem Dar of Pakistan, who has officiated 8 matches spanning from 2004-13.

11 - MS Dhoni and Ricky Ponting have captained the most matches (11) for their respective sides. MS Dhoni has won 8 of those 11 matches and lost the remaining 3. On the other hand, Ricky Ponting has won just 2 of those 11 matches, lost 6 and the remaining 3 ended in a draw.

34 - Sachin Tendulkar has played the most number of matches (34) in the Border-Gavaskar series. He is followed by Rahul Dravid (32) and VVS Laxman (29). Ricky Ponting has played the most number of matches (29) for Australia and is joint third overall with VVS Laxman.

46 - Rahul Dravid holds the record for most catches (46) by a non-wicketkeeper in 32 matches and 60 innings. He also holds the record for most catches (13) in a single series. VVS Laxman is next with 36 catches in 29 matches and 54 innings.

75 - Adam Gilchrist holds the record for the most dismissals (75) by a wicketkeeper. He achieved that in 18 matches and 36 innings. He also holds the record for the most dismissals (25) in a single series. MS Dhoni follows him with 57 dismissals in 17 matches and 31 innings.

93 - The record for the lowest team total is held by Australia when they were all out for 93 in Mumbai in the year 2004.

219 - The record for the highest victory margin in terms of an innings is held by India when they defeated Australia by an innings and 219 runs in Kolkata in the year 1998.

342 - The record for the highest victory margin in terms of runs is held by Australia when they defeated India by 342 runs in Nagpur in the year 2004.

386 - Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke hold the record for the highest partnership by runs (386) for any wicket, which they achieved in Adelaide in 2012. VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid’s historic partnership (376) at Kolkata in 2001 follows next. The latest to the list is the partnership between Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara (370) which is the third highest.

705 - The record for the highest team total in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is held by India. They scored 705/7d at a run-rate of 3.76 in Sydney in the season 2003-04. The highest team total for Australia is 659/4d, which they scored in Sydney in 2011-12.
