Glenn Maxwell pleased to see crackdown on bowlers with suspect actions

Australia’s Glenn Maxwell said he was pleased about the ICC’s strong stand to do away with suspect bowlers. The explosive batsman also felt that the authorities left it too late to call foul on the ones with an illegal bowling action.

“I’m actually quite happy that they’ve started doing it. I think it’s actually started to happen a bit too late. It seems to have been going on for too long and it’s something that’s been talked about a lot in quite a few changing rooms and in the media as well.

“Now we are going to see a lot more conventional off-spinners doing the job in international cricket which I think is good for the game and it levels the playing field again and hopefully it stays that way,” the player was quoted as saying in an interview to PakPassion.net after Australia’s 3-0 ODI series win against Pakistan.

As many as 5 off-spinners have been banned in the last few months including Saeed Ajmal, one of the leading bowlers in world cricket. A number of unconventional spinners have been plying their trade and more and more of them are being held suspect off late. Notably, Sunil Narine and Mohammad Hafeez were also reported for a suspect action in the recently concluded Champions League T20 with the former missing the final.

The Caribbean spinner was even withdrawn from West Indies’ ongoing tour of India citing fear of him being reported and banned in international cricket. A handful number of players, both former and current have come in support of the need to keep the game clean. But on the other hand, there are some questions raised on reporting bowlers with the World Cup in a few months time.

Maxwell uncertain about Test call-up

Maxwell inspired his team to victory with this part-time spin, defending just 2 runs in the final over in the third ODI against Pakistan. The Kings XI Punjab star also made a quick-fire 76 in the 2nd ODI to help Australia to a win.

However, the Aussie is not reading too much into his performances and isn’t sure of a Test comeback based on the same.

"Yes, it would be nice to get a call-up but I don't think I've quite done enough in the one-day series against Pakistan to warrant a call-up to the Test side.

“I think I've missed a couple of opportunities to make a big score and push my name forward for selection, but you never know as the conditions will suit an off-spinning allrounder and hopefully I can find my way into the starting XI. It's an extremely strong line-up though, but fingers crossed," the player who turned 26 yesterday said.
