IPL Results 2016: Scores, Updated Points Table and Fixture Schedule after KXIP vs. MI Mohali Match 21

Parthiv Patel (81) and Rayudu (65) put up a 137 run partnership to steer MI to a total of 189

Kings XI Punjab captain David Miller won his first toss of the season and chose to bowl against Mumbai Indians in Mohali, continuing the bat second scheme in this IPL. Miller also gave the same explanation at the toss, that his decision was influenced by "chasing teams being successful" in IPL 2016. 17 of 20 games this season have been won by teams batting second.

The Kings XI made two changes to the team that lost the Sunrisers in the last game. Mitchell Johnson came in for South African Kyle Abbott while leg-spinner Pardeep Sahu replaced all-rounder Rishi Dhawan, who had a dismal outing. Mumbai fielded the same XI from their 10 run loss against the Delhi Daredevils on Saturday.

Both teams have lost four matches each and, will be keen to spark a turnaround this season. Rohit Sharma said at the toss that he expected the batting line up bat more responsibility so that the bowlers could do their job.

Patel and Rayudu save MI after losing Rohit early

Mumbai Indians got off to the most horrendous start, losing captain Rohit on the third delivery to Sandeep Sharma with none on the board. Ambati Rayudu, MI’s most consistent batsman this season joined Parthiv Patel at the crease. Rayudu took the charge to KXIP but Parthiv played a sedated innings and almost went back to the dugout after being caught for just 15 off 20 deliveries, but a review showed that Mitchell Johnson had overstepped by a big margin, giving Parthiv the much-needed life.

Rayudu also got a life a few overs later when he was dropped by Axar Patel in the deep. Both these batsmen made the most of their chances and put up a 137 run partnership, before Rayudu fell to Axar, after making a 65 off 37 deliveries. Jos Buttler who came in next played a gem of an innings striking 24 runs off 13 balls. MI looked all set to score over 200, but good bowling by the Kings in the last 3 overs, saw MI lose four wickets for just 15 runs restricting them to just 189 for the loss of 6 wickets. Parthiv and Rayudu’s partnership helped MI set KXIP a total of 190 to chase for victory.

KXIP lose Vijay and Vohra early

The Kings started off well with Murali Vijay looking in great nick, he scored 19 runs in quick time hitting two fours and a six but fell going for a big one against Southee. Manan Vohra, on the other hand, looked rusty as he scored only 7 off 11 balls before falling to Bumrah. This is when Shaun Marsh and Glenn Maxwell picked up the innings and giving the KXIP fans the much-needed hope. After a series of dismal performances, Maxwell seemed on song and strung together an 89 run partnership. Maxwell was partnered well by Marsh who has seemed in great form this IPL. Marsh fell at 45, just when the Maxwell-Marsh partnership was looking dangerous.

Maxwell finds form again

Maxwell, on the other hand, brought up his first fifty since 2014. David Miller joined him at the fall of Marsh’s wicket and needed to play a captain’s knock to take KXIP to their second victory. But it wasn’t to be as they lost Maxwell after he played on an incoming delivery by Bumrah which sparked a collapse. Miller continued to hit a few lusty blows, but as wickets fell at the other end due to some brilliant bowling by MI bowlers in the death KXIP succumbed to their fourth loss in the IPL 2016.

Match result:

MI 189/6 (Parthiv 81, Rayudu 65; M.Sharma 38-3)

KXIP 164/7 (Maxwell 56, Marsh 45; Bumrah 26-3)

MOM: Parthiv Patel 81 (58)
