Punjab Kings (PBKS) take on Mumbai Indians (MI) in Match 33 of IPL 2024 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur on Thursday, April 18.

Both PBKS and MI are having poor campaigns. While Punjab are eighth in the points table, with two wins and four losses, Mumbai are below them. They also have four points, but PBKS have a better net run rate.

There's nothing much to pick in the head-to-head battle between Punjab and Mumbai. While Punjab have won 15 matches, MI have emerged victorious in 16.

Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings have been involved in some close battles over the years in the IPL. One of them was in Dubai during the 2020 edition when MI and PBKS needed to play out two Super Overs to decide the winner.

MI and PBKS were involved in a double Super-Over tussle in Dubai

Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to bat first in Match 36 of IPL 2020 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. They put up 176-6. Quinton de Kock top-scored with 53 off 43, while Kieron Pollard contributed 34* off 12 and Nathan Coulter-Nile 24* off 12.

Incredibly, Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab) also responded with exactly the same score - 176-6. Punjab skipper KL Rahul top-scored with 77 off 51, hitting seven fours and three sixes. He was bowled by a brute from Jasprit Bumrah in the 18th over.

The equation came down to nine needed off the last over bowled by Trent Boult and eventually to two off the last ball. Chris Jordan dug out a yorker and completed one but was run out attempting the second as the match went into the Super Over.

Punjab batted first in the Super Over, but Bumrah bowled brilliantly and conceded only five runs while picking up two wickets. Nicholas Pooran (0) miscued a full toss off the second ball, while Rahul was trapped lbw off the last ball, attempting a fancy reverse ramp.

Mohammed Shami, though, matched Bumrah's brilliance as PBKS took the game into the second Super Over. Shami nailed his yorkers and conceded four runs off the first five balls. De Kock (3) was run out attempting the second run off the last delivery of the Super Over.

In the second Super Over, Mumbai Indians batted first and posted 11-1. Pollard struck the third ball from Jordan for a boundary, but Hardik Pandya was run out off the next legal delivery.

Chasing 12, Chris Gayle launched the first ball from Boult, a high full toss, over long-on for a maximum. The third ball was crunched over extra cover for four by Mayank Agarwal. He hit the winning runs, punching the next ball, another full toss on leg, over midwicket for a boundary.
