Peter Moores to take over England coaching job

Michael Vaughan of England has a chat with Peter Moores during the England nets session at Edgbaston on July 29, 2008 in Birmingham, England.

Following the exit of Andy Flower as the England head coach and the subsequent series of disappointing performances under the interim coach Ashley Giles, England Cricket Board has decided to appoint the Lancashire boss Peter Moores as the new national coach.

The Guardian reports that the ECB will make an official announcement at the Lord’s on Saturday morning. Paul Farbrace, who coached the Sri Lankan team to World Cup T20 triumph recently, will serve as his assistant.

This would be Moores’ 2nd stint with the England team after previously been appointed in 2007, where he succeeded Duncan Fletcher, only to get sacked in early 2009 due to a strained relationship with the then captain Kevin Pietersen, who was not fond of his way of coaching.

A tweet appeared from Guardian’s official Twitter account:

On his previous stint with the England team, the 51-year-old, speaking earlier this month, said: “Yes I did make mistakes. I look back at some things and think there were definitely things we could have tackled differently.”

“Having done the job before you learn a lot. I have had five or six years to reflect on a lot of things that did work [and] things that didn’t. You learn as you get more experience and hopefully make better decisions than in the past because you have seen situations come up before and you have an understanding of what is needed.”

Moores, although never made it to the national team as a player, had a successful domestic career with Sussex as a wicket-keeper batsman effecting over 500 dismissals. He has been effective as a coach in the domestic circuit, leading Sussex and Lancashire to County title wins.
