4 Manchester United players who must be shown the door this summer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lifted the spirits at Manchester United after his arrival in December, however, the Norwegian's honeymoon spell came to an end in late March, suffering a terrible run of results, managing just two wins in their last 12 games to conclude their abysmal season.

United paid for their sharp loss of form in the last two months, finishing sixth in the PL and missed out on Champions League action next season.

Ed Woodward, United's Chief Executive, has assured Ole of the financial backing to improve the squad to compete with the top teams. In his third quarterly conference call, Woodward said:

"The strength of our business means we have the financial resources to continue to provide backing for the manager and creating success on the pitch,"
"This as ever remains our number one goal."

Getting rid of the underperforming squad members is equally as essential as recruiting fresh players to improve the group as a whole. Keeping United's rebuild in mind, let us take a look at four players who should seek their fortunes elsewhere.

#4 Matteo Darmian

Matteo Darmian wanted a move back to Italy last summer, but lack of acceptable offers kept him at United. Persistent injuries have reduced Darmian to a reserve role.

The club captain, Antonio Valencia, was denied an extension by the club, and Darmian might be the next full-back to depart Old Trafford. United are targeting a right-back who can compete with Diogo Dalot for the starting berth next season.

Manchester United are interested in luring Paulo Dybala from Juventus, and the bosses could use Darmian as a bargaining chip with the Serie A giants.

#3 Marcos Rojo

Marcos Rojo arrived at Manchester United in the summer of 2014 after his reliable display in the World Cup. The Argentine never impressed at Old Trafford, being sidelined continuously due to his incessant injury problems.

Marco Silva tried to buy Rojo last summer after arriving at Everton, but the transfer move never materialised. With defensive recruitment a priority, Rojo must be in Ole's long list of departures.

Given the 29-year-old's fitness issues, finding a potential suitor for him will be a tough task for United, but cleansing the squad is Solskjaer's priority ahead of next season.

#2 Juan Mata

Man United signed Juan Mata in the 2014 January transfer window for a reported £37.1 million, making him their most expensive player at that time. The Spaniard has won three trophies during his time at Old Trafford.

The attacking midfielder's loss of sharpness and his injury issues have reduced him to a sporadic role this season. Mata's agreement ends this summer, and his wage demands have stalled the extension talks.

With United's rebuild at the fore, allowing the Spanish playmaker leave Old Trafford would be a wise option. The Red Devils could replace Juan Mata with players like Hakim Ziyech or Bruno Fernandes.

#1 Alexis Sanchez

Alexis Sanchez will go down as one of the most expensive flops ever. The Chilean's titanic weekly wage makes him one of the highest paid players in the Premier League.

United allocated their coveted number 7 shirt to the 30-year-old, but the Chilean has failed to deliver as expected. Alexis' prolific three and a half year spell at Arsenal has taken its toll on his body, and a series of niggling injuries indicates that.

Sanchez is eager to put an end to his disenchanting stay at Old Trafford, seeking a move away from Manchester United. Alexis' prospect of departure is a win-win situation for both parties as he could rediscover his touch elsewhere, and United will invest the money saved from his wages on other players.
