Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has stated that the club would welcome back former hero Fernando Torres with ‘open arms’.

Torres came through the ranks at Atletico and earned the captaincy as a teenager before moving to Liverpool in his early-20s for a fee of around £21 million.

He soon established himself as one of the best forwards in world football, scoring 33 goals in his opening season and helping Spain to European Championship glory in the summer of 2008. He was on top of the world and almost won the Premier League title with Liverpool the following season.

It all soon turned sour, though, and he left in 2011 for Chelsea for £50m. He has never looked like the same player since, scoring just 19 goals in the league since his arrival.

There are rumours that he will leave the club in the summer as they’ve finally run out of patience with the Spaniard and his former club are happy to welcome him back.

Cerezo said: “I don’t know, I haven’t even thought about it [Torres returning]”

“He is in a fantastic team, he has a long contract and we haven’t been offered anything, nor have we asked for anything.”

“He is a symbol of Atletico Madrid, and if he was to return here we would welcome him with open arms.”
