Letting Frank Lampard go was a big mistake by Jose Mourinho this season

The one that got away .

Frank Lampard is playing a major and defining role in Manchester City’s title campaign this season. And Jose Mourinho has been defending his decision to let the Chelsea legend leave Stamford Bridge. Lampard has played a crucial role in what have been City's best games this season.

Despite playing less than he did at Chelsea last season he has performed brilliantaly in whatever time Manuel Pelligrini has given him on the pitch.

Jose Mourinho said a few days ago : “We made the right decision. Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic are the next 10 years of the club.

The project is to prepare for 10 years, not next year. Didier Drogba is a striker, coming to help and support the strikers.

John Terry is the best defender in England, so it doesn’t matter how old he is. A big player like Frank would stop the development of the other guys.”

In my view , Lampard is one of the best midfielders in the league at this point of time. It shouldn't matter how old he is , just as Mourinho said about John Terry. Mourinho's defence of his decision of letting Frank go isn't a convincing one in this argument.

Lampard is helping young players develop at Etihad . He could have been playing the same role at Chelsea. Also , Matic is 26, while Fabregas will be 28 in May next year. They are not going to stay 10 years in the first team at Chelsea.

Lampard has played a huge role in City’s title challenge

Lampard, if used exactly as he is at Manchester City, as an impact substitute and occasional starter in a system of rotation, would not have harmed development of these players.Everybody at City cannot stop talking about his professionalism and worth as a role model to the youth and academy players.

Frank Lampard is still one of the best players in the Premier League at 36-years-old and shows no signs of retiring any time soon. The former Chelsea star joined MLS side New York City on a two-year deal before signing for sister club City on loan until the end of December.

Manuel Pellegrini wants to extend the impressive midfielder's loan deal after a series of clinical performances from Lampard who has scored six goals and four assists in 14 apperances for the sky blues.

“There have been no serious discussions but we know exactly what we must do,” said the manager of manchester city "Frank wants to stay, we want to keep him. Now we must resolve the problem with New York City and MLS.

The ever-modest former England midfielder has been counted among the greats by many and right now is making vital contributions for the defending Premier League champions Manchester City.

His goals have come at vital times including a late equaliser against title rivals and former club Chelsea and the match-winning close-range effort at the King Power Stadium.

“When he decided to become a direct competitor of Chelsea then love stories are over,” said Mourinho after Lampard’s equaliser against Chelsea.

Mourinho made a decision to let Frank Lampard go which has turned out to be a mistake, possibly a fatal one in terms of a title race destined to be very tight.

As for City, they must hold on to the former Chelsea man . They have big games coming up in the Champions League and the Premier League race is heating up. Frank Lampard is going to be instrumental in Manchester City's campaign as he has been so far this season .
