Marco Van Ginkel's Ajax loan refusal a good call by Chelsea

Chelsea v Hull City - Premier League

Marco Van Ginkel

There are reports that Chelsea issued a flat out refusal to a loan offer from Ajax for Marco Van Ginkel at the end of the summer transfer window.

It has been a slow start for Van Ginkel, who has only had a couple of substitute appearances so early in the season, leading to claims that he has sacrificed his World Cup ambitions for Chelsea.

Loan refusal part of strategy

Van Ginkel chose to join Chelsea as he was promised that he would get game time in this crucial World Cup year. With Mourinho understanding the needs of players to be getting game time (as per his comments in Rooney transfer chase), it seems likely he will be good to his word.

The refusal of his loan means that the club has put faith in him to be a key part of the squad in a season that will hopefully last more than 60 games.

In his position in central midfield, there are Frank Lampard and Ramires, and with Lampard unlikely to be overworked, there is plenty of scope for him to get chances to show his worth.

If he can start even 25 of these, he will have the perfect opportunity to press his claims for the Dutch national team and would have a good chance of lifting some silverware.

This should be seen as a positive for the 20-year-old as it means that Jose Mourinho has the Dutch international firmly in his plans for the new season.

The final factor to consider is that the bid came from Ajax. Having signed Van Ginkel from rivals Vitesse Arnhem, with whom we have a brilliant relationship, would it be appropriate for us to loan a talented player to them?

I think not.
