The January transfer window is rarely as lively as the summer one but both the windows have their share of rumors. The rumors seem to liven up on deadline day which is the most exciting phase of both the transfer windows. Some of the biggest clubs are linked with exciting players on deadline day but ultimately the moves don’t materialize. Here is a list of the top 5 deadline day transfers that didn’t happen.

La Liga side Valenica were eager to secure the services of Manchester United forward Javier Hernandez but the deal fell through. The 25-year-old is behind has made just 14 appearances for David Moyes this season who preferred to use Danny Welbeck as the main striker in the absence of Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie.

He has scored important goals for the Red Devils this term which still makes him an important asset to the club. Hernandez was linked with a move away from United in order for more first team football due to the World Cup coming up and a host of clubs were interested in his signature.

Manchester United had stated that their player was not for sale and Hernandez’s agent also said that his client had no intention of moving away from the club. Valenica submitted a late bid for the talented striker but it was rejected by the Red Devils on deadline day.

4. Eliaquim Mangala to Manchester City

A host of clubs including Manchester United and Paris Saint Germain were interested in capturing Mangala but City were the first club to actively pursue the player.

The 22-year-old is tipped to be one of the best center backs in the world in a few years time and is an integral part of Porto and the France national team. Porto players have a history of being extremely expensive but City were willing to part with £38 million for Mangala.

The deal ultimately fell though for unknown reasons and Mangala will stay with the Portuguese club for the rest of the season. City will face competition from other clubs if they attempt to reignite their pursuit of the Frenchman in the summer who’s value will almost certainly increase after the World Cup.

3. Yevhen Konoplyanka to Liverpool

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers had identified Dnipro midfielder Konoplyanka as a target for the Reds after the failed pursuit of Mohamed Salah who ultimately joined Chelsea but were left disappointed when the deal fell through.

Konoplyanka is an extremely talented midfielder known for his ability to dictate play and scored in 3 World Cup Qualifiers for Ukraine including a long range shot against England.

The 24-year-old agreed personal terms with Liverpool and had even had a medical with the club but the Dnipro owner refused to sign the paperwork that would allow Konoplyanka to join the Premier League club.

Liverpool, who are enjoying a strong season, may regret missing out on Yevhen in January as he would have helped them push for Champions League football next season.

2. Miroslav Klose to Arsenal

Arsene Wenger attempted to bring Klose to the Emirates on loan from Lazio but the Italian club shot down the move.

Arsenal are in dire need of a striker to relieve pressure on Olivier Giroud and are currently facing a shortage in the attacking department due to the loss of Theo Walcott for the rest of the season through injury.

Klose, who shares the distinction of being Germany’s top scorer along with Gerd Muller, was keen to move to the London club and even spoke to his national team-mates Lukas Podolski and Per Mertersacker about a move to England.

The 35-year-old, who was the 2006 World Cups top scorer, would have been a great addition to the Gunners if he was allowed to leave but will now have to settle for plying his trade in Italy until the next transfer window.

1. Toni Kroos to Manchester United

Manchester United boss David Moyes, who recently signed Juan Mata, was interested in signing Bayern Munich’s Toni Kroos in a bid to bolster his teams weak midfield and even traveled to Germany to have a chat with the players agent to discuss a move.

However, no move materialized, and the player remained at Bayern on deadline day. Kroos has been used sparingly by Bayern manager Pep Guardiola this season and is reportedly considering a move away from the German champions in order to seal a spot in Germany’s squad for this years World Cup.

Moyes is still interested in signing the talented midfielder and may return in the summer to try and tempt the player to join Manchester United.
