The records the Golden State Warriors have broken so far in the 2015-16 NBA season

The Lakers were the team that gave way to the Warriors’ for their record

The reigning champsIf someone told you, maybe, five years ago, that the Golden State Warriors would beat a team led by LeBron James for the NBA Championship soon, you wouldn’t have remiss for bursting into hysterical laughter. But that’s exactly why the NBA is one of the most popular sporting leagues in the world, vacillating from dog days to heyday. Teams recruit high-level athletes to form what they think will be the best possible line-ups and then sculpt them into world beaters. But what looks good on paper isn’t necessarily what’ll get results on the hardwood. The current Golden State Warriors unit is a contradiction of that statement. A 6’8” power forward? A 6’6” small forward? Laughable, until you see their utter dominance from October 28th, 2014 to the present. It has been a long road to the gold, but one that is all the more satisfying because of its arduousness. After seasons with paltry win records, enter Steve “Frankenstein” Kerr, who successfully created a monster, one that might even shatter the immortal Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls’ record of 72-10.With that number most certainly in their sights, let us take a look at the other records that the reigning champs have surpassed so far in the season

#1 Most successful start to an NBA season at 16-0

The Lakers were the team that gave way to the Warriors’ for their record

When (Warriors) fans found out that they would play their 16th game of the season against the ailing Lakers, everyone around them became psychics for an instant. Their thoughts were transparent: “The record is ours!”.

Most fans would have had their hearts in the mouths when the incumbents faced off against sworn enemies the LA Clippers for the second time and were down 18 points in the 2nd quarter. But they showed true championship spirit as they rallied and scored clutch plays to wrested the game away as the Clippers watched hopelessly.

If they continue their roaring form, they are in good stead to set a season-start record that will endure for generations to come, unless they break it in a subsequent season.

#2 Best start to a season by a defending champion at 15-0

Denver posed no threat

On Sunday, November 22nd , the Warriors beat the Denver Nuggets to go 15-0, setting a new record for the most successful start to a season by a defending champion. The record they broke belonged to the revered Boston Celtics, led by the legendary duo of Bill Russell and Bob Cousey, so it’s nothing to be sniffed at.

What was noteworthy about that game was the fact that it was an all-round performance, with Curry, Thompson and Barnes sharing the load, unlike some of the other big teams that depend on a duo to carry them through.

#3 Steph Curry scores 118 points in 3 games

Steph Curry matched Michael Jordan for the mos points scored in 3 games

On October 31st, Curry scored an impressive 53 points to take his tally to match the GOAT Michael Jordan’s mind-boggling 118 points in 3 games, way back in 1989. The fact that his stats are in the vein of Michael Jordan are ostentatious enough, but it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise considering that he’s probably one of the greatest shooters in NBA history. With a head coach who holds the record for most threes ever made in Steve Kerr, it won’t be far-fetched to expect comparisons to records he himself has created, in the not-so-distant future.

#4 Stephen Curry scores 40 points in season opener, most by a reigning MVP

Steph Curry didn’t need any warm up

The Warriors’ lynchpin picked up the new season right where he left off in the previous one, determined to make erase all the aspersions cast on his team after their monumental victory. Curry scored 40 points against the New Orleans Pelicans in the 2015-16 season opener, falling just one short of the 41 that the fabled Kareem Abdul-Jabbar scored during his tenure with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Two games, two comparisons with two of the greatest players to have ever stepped onto the hardwood.

#5 Steph Curry (again) passes his dad in list of all-time 3-pointer scorers list

Curry is on course to be the greatest 3-point shooter in NBA history

The fact that Curry crossed his father, himself a three-point shooting record holder, in three-pointers made in less than half the games, is edifying enough. The reigning MVP, who is in his sixth year in the league, has 1269 threes from 2885 attempts at an average of .440. His father, Dell, made 1245 in 1083 games. Staggering.

Curry has the best shooting average amongst the top 50 sharpshooters and if he continues in this form, he will, in fact, finish as the greatest shooter of all time. Curry is 36th on the list currently, just one place and four threes away from the face of the NBA, LeBron James, who he will certainly overtake, perhaps, in his next game.
