10 amazing Royal Rumble records of WWE superstars

There aren’t many pay-per-views in the WWE’s arsenal that would be as statistically rich as the Royal Rumble. With 30 wrestlers vying for that one spot to headline WrestleMania, the match and the show are all about the numbers that matter. The Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania will host the 28th annual Royal Rumble in a matter of weeks, and this provides the loyal WWE fans with another opportunity to dig into the numbers and get awed by what some men have managed to accomplish. All these numbers will surely get refreshed once the show gets going this year, but that doesn’t mean we cannot cherish what the past has given us. So here is a look at some of the amazing Royal Rumble records of WWE superstars.

#10 Brock Lesnar Youngest Royal Rumble winner (25 years)

This is one of those classic examples of how high the company was on Lesnar back during his initial run. The Beast won the Royal Rumble just one year after his debut and he was just 25 years old at that time.

He entered the match as the 29th entrant and eliminated none other than The Undertaker to win the match. And no, Roman Reigns is not going to break this record even if he wins this year, since he is 29 years old already.

The only person in the main roster who could break Lesnar’s youngest winner record at the 2015 Rumble is Bo Dallas; let that sink in for some time.

#9 Dudley Boys No appearance in a Royal Rumble match despite five Royal Rumble appearances

This might sound a bit confusing at first, but take a breather and think it through. The Dudley Boys have appeared in the Royal Rumble pay-per-view on five separate occasions but never appeared in the Battle Royal even once.

All five were tag team matches as one would’ve already guessed, and most of them included the tag gold as well. The Dudleys won the title twice at Rumble and even had two table matches from those five.

There are some rumours about The Dudley boys making a return to WWE in the near future and if that is going to work out this year, then the legendary tag team is sure to break their jinx in the land of Extreme.

#8 Batista Most number of wins from same position (2)

Batista’s Royal Rumble win last year didn’t evoke many positive reactions among the fans and rightfully so. WWE pushed him right into the main event scene without testing the waters, and letting him win the Rumble was indeed a big blunder.

The Animal won the match after coming in as the 28th entrant and it was the second time he won the match from that spot. His last win came in 2005 where he went on to eliminate John Cena to be the winner.

The 27th spot has produced the maximum number of winners with four, but a wrestler winning more than once from a particular position is so unique that it only belongs to Batista even if the decisions weren’t popular.

#7 Shawn Michaels Most number of eliminations (41)

There wouldn’t be many superstars out there who could give Shawn Michaels a run for his money when it comes to Royal Rumble records. The Heart Break Kid always had a great outing at the Rumble no matter when he came in, and he has the numbers to back this as well.

Michaels competed in numerous Rumble matches throughout his illustrious career and has an aggregate number of 41 eliminations across those matches.

He might not be able to improve on that record due to his retirement, but the chances of it being broken anytime soon are slim. The only competition for Michaels is Kane who is close behind, but considering how he has been booked recently, Kane might not reach there in 2015.

#6 Jim Duggan and Shawn Michaels Four decades of Royal Rumble

Another one for Shawn Michaels, and this is a record he shares with Jim Duggan. For those who didn’t know, Jim was the first ever Royal Rumble winner when he emerged victorious in 1988.

He also had the privilege of wrestling in the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s, holding a unique record of wrestling over four decades in the Royal Rumble. The Heart Break Kid also has this record, as his last match at the Rumble before retirement came in 2010.

Duggan might not be able to have another go five years later and make it five decades, but Michaels surely can do that if he decides to wear those spandex and boots once again to embrace the cheering crowd.

#5 Rey Mysterio Longest time in a Royal Rumble match (1:02:12)

Never be fooled by a man’s size in professional wrestling, because from what we’ve seen over the years it’s the small packages that often deliver the big surprises.

Rey Mysterio was no different. The Master of 619 holds the record for the longest time in a Rumble match thanks to his performance in 2006 where he entered the match as the second entrant and lasted an entire hour and two minutes.

He was just 42 seconds ahead of the previous record set by Chris Benoit a couple of years before, and winning the match made the achievement even sweeter for the Mexican superstar, who is experiencing a lot of friction with WWE at the moment.

#4 Santino Marella Shortest time in a Royal Rumble match (1.9 seconds)

By the time you’ve read this sentence, Santino Marella would’ve been eliminated, simple as that. The Italian was recognized as a good technician back in the days but once WWE decided to rope him in, he was nothing more than a comedy act.

Having the record of the shortest time in a Rumble match was due to this same push, and it’s a record that will take a lot to be rewritten.

Sadly for all the Santino fans out there, his career is currently up in the air thanks to a neck injury; it would be a big miracle if the WWE allows him to wrestle again with such a condition.

#3 Vince McMahon - Least number of eliminations by the winner (1)

There are certain luxuries of being the boss, and this probably was one of them. Vince McMahon entered the 1999 Royal Rumble in the second spot and ended up being the longest standing superstar in the match when he went on to win it.

However, there was a big twist to all of this. Vince didn’t even get in the ring until the last moment; he just sat there on the side till only Steve Austin was left in the ring. Austin turned out to be Vince’s only elimination and that made the chairman eligible for a championship match at WrestleMania.

It was Austin who got the match in the end, but in the record books it’s still Vince McMahon who won the 1999 Royal Rumble, even if it came in an embarrassing manner.

#2 Stone Cold Steve Austin Most number of Royal Rumble wins (3)

Steve Austin might not come back for another Rumble match from the looks of it, but he did leave a lasting impact when it mattered. The Texas rattle snake holds the record for most number of Royal Rumble wins – three.

His first win came in 1997 where he eliminated Bret Hart to be the winner. Next year, Austin once again won the Rumble and this time it was The Rock who got eliminated last. 2001 proved to be the third occasion as Austin ended Kane’s record setting run to be the winner.

John Cena, Batista, Shawn Michaels and Hulk Hogan are the only possible candidates who could break Austin’s record in the near future as all of them have two wins each.

#1 Roman Reigns Most number of eliminations in one match (12)

The fans that saw last year’s Rumble could scarcely have missed this one, because Reigns was all over the match. He was not only the runner up at the Rumble last time around but was also the most dominant name from the lot.

He eliminated a whopping 12 superstars after coming into the match as the 15th entrant. Reigns’ hit list included the likes of Dolph Ziggler, Sheamus, Luke Harper, Great Khali and also his then partners Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins.

This was a new record in the Rumble history; the previous one was 11 which belonged to Kane. Reigns will be out there once again to run wild at the Rumble and unlike last time, he might win the whole thing in 2015.
