7 superstars whose promising careers were shortened by fate

Christian

Some promising careers have seen tragic endingsNothing is permanent in this world. The people, the money, the suffering, and the expectations, everything is temporary. A twist of fate is all thats needed to change such things upside down. Some people might have a tough time admitting to concepts like fate or luck but at the end of the day, it would be easier to explain the fall of some people with such words.Professional wrestling has witnessed numerous twist of fates (no, not the finishing move of Matt Hardy) during its rich history. We have seen the fall of some promising wrestlers as fans. This list takes a look at those names that were destined to reach the top by fell short due to fate.

#8 Honorable Mention: Christian

Christian

Christian is a legend, but he could have been more successful if it wasn’t for his injuries. He had to sit out a major portion of his career due to injuries. If he was actually able to wrestle during all those years, Christian would have had a few more WWE Championship reigns under his belt.

#7 David Von Erich

David Von Erich

The list would never be complete without the mention of Von Erich Family. It is hands down one of the most tragic wrestling families in the history. Fritz Von Erich, a prominent promoter back during the territory day had three talented sons, David, Kerry and Mike. While all three were talented, it was David who stood out. He was groomed to be the new NWA Champion and attracted attention from all the territories.

However, David was found dead in his hotel room due to intestinal enteritis. His death was caused due to a drug overdose. But it was only the start. Kerry and Mike soon passed away and the family went down into the history books as a tragic name.

#6 Droz

Droz

The fans that saw the wrestling documentary Beyond the Mat would be familiar with Droz. He was signed up by Vince McMahon due to his ability to vomit on demand. It might sound a bit awkward, but Vince loved it anyways. Droz’s career never took off actually. He had a failed spell as part of the New Legion of Doom and later joined hands with Prince Albert to form a mid card tag team.

Just when the team was starting to find marginal success, tragedy struck. During a SmackDown taping, D’Lo Brown messed up a running power bomb and broke the neck of Droz. He was paralyzed due to the same and this marked the end of his career.

#5 Brian Pillman

Brian Pillman

Brian Pillman’s career was cut short by his untimely death. But before the tragedy struck, he suffered a horrific car crash that forced him to change his wrestling style. Pillman’s ankle was fused in a walking position and he had to wrestle through pain for the rest of his career. A year later after joining WWE, he passed away due to a heart condition.

Pillman had the ability to be a big name in the Attitude Era and the segments he delivered said the same. The way in which we love Dean Ambrose shows that Pillman’s character was something which had the ability to break the boundaries of different wrestling eras.

#4 Nigel McGuiness

Nigel McGuiness

The TNA and Ring of Honor fans would be familiar with Nigel McGuiness. He stole the show in both the promotions and was immediately in the radar of WWE. Being one of the best technical wrestlers in the business, Nigel was expected to be a big draw wherever he went. But all these expectations crashed down due to his health.

In TNA, Nigel’s career was cut short due to hepatitis B. His WWE contract got a big blow due to his bicep injury and such health conditions forced Nigel to retire from the sport that he loved. The matches he had during his stay are the biggest proof of his talent and again, if it wasn’t for his health, Nigel would have been a big name by now.

#3 Chris Benoit

Chris Benoit

The inclusion of Chris Benoit could be controversial. He had reached the top in 2004 and apparently lived up to his prime as well. However, is Benoit in the Hall of Fame now? Or does WWE even mention about him these days?

If the suicide-murder tragedy hadn’t happened, Benoit would have walked into the Hall of Fame. He had an illustrious wrestling career and was an inspiration to the younger generations. Despite all these, Benoit is now treated as though he is Voldemort from the Harry Porter Universe. What Benoit did was wrong and if it wasn’t for the incident, he would have been categorized alongside names like Triple H and Shawn Michaels.

#2 Magnum TA

Magnum TA

Magnum TA was considered to be the next big thing back in the Territory Days. Almost all the territories were high on him and wanted to crown him as the NWA World Heavyweight Champion. But his career was derailed when the Porsche he drove crashed into a telephone pole. He was stuck in the car for nearly two hours and doctors doubted that he would ever walk again.

He did walk again but due to the injuries he suffered during the accident, his wrestling career was cut short. And just like that, a man who was considered to be the next big thing was forced to retire from wrestling. Do you need any more motivation to drive safe?

#1 Owen Hart

Owen Hart

Owen Hart had a lengthy and colourful career, but there was a lot more to come from him. He had the calibre to become a WWE Champion and was probably on his way to do so when he fell to his death. Still recognized as one of the nicest wrestlers in wrestling history, Owen won the Intercontinental Championship twice and the European title once.

He also won the Tag team championship on four separate occasions, but the big prize is still not in his resume. If it wasn’t for his untimely death, Owen would have gone on to become a great WWE champion and that’s the bottom line.
