Cricket2002: India had to chase 326 for victory against England in the final of the NatWest Series and they were reeling at 146 for 5 with Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid all back in the pavilion. But nobody, it seemed, had bothered to inform Mohammad Kaif and Yuvraj Singh. The pair added 121 in 106 balls to haul India back into contention, before Kaif sealed a two-wicket win with three balls to spare.

1984: Birth of Faf du Plessis, a South African cricketer, who has played several matches at international level for the South African national cricket team.

1974: On this day at Headingley, India played their first one-day international, the last of the (then) six Test-playing nations to do so.

1979: Just over a year after his Test debut, David Gower carved a regal unbeaten 200 against India at Edgbaston.Football

2011: Liverpool played in China for the first time, beating Guangdong Sunray Cave in a friendly, 4-3.

1979: Birth of Craig Bellamy, a Welsh footballer who plays as a forward for Cardiff City and the Welsh national team.

Tennis

1961: Birth of Anders Jarryd, a former professional tennis player from Sweden. During his career he won eight Grand Slam doubles titles, reached the World No. 1 doubles ranking, and achieved a career-high singles ranking of World No. 5.

1968: Birth of Silke Meier, a former professional tennis player. She was born on July 13, 1968 in Wiesbaden, West Germany and played on the WTA tour from 1985 to 1999.
