Why now is the right time for a Dean Ambrose heel turn

Dean Ambrose is unquestionably one of WWE’s most popular talents but is he just starting to stagnate?

Coming off of his match against Chris Jericho at Extreme Rules, I couldn’t help but feel as though Dean Ambrose was missing that spark, that x factor that he’s known for that makes his matches exciting to watch. I felt the same after his WrestleMania bout against Brock Lesnar, but what is it that is making arguably the most dynamic character in WWE become underwhelming?

Maybe that’s just it, the character. We are constantly told by Michael Cole and JBL that Ambrose is “a lunatic”, “He’s crazy”, however that isn’t really shown to be true from tuning in to Raw on a weekly basis, unless you consider naming a plant enough to make a man a lunatic. Also, we don’t know what makes this man unstable, what has he been through to make him this way?

A heel turn could be just what is needed to delve into his past and explore the psyche of the Dean Ambrose character. Anyone that has seen the former Jon Moxley’s promos from his time in CZW or even in FCW knows that he can cut a profound and meaningful promo about his dark past, but we are yet to see much of this on WWE television.

Plus, he has already worked with most of the current heels on the roster. A feud against a Sami Zayn or an AJ Styles would feel fresh and could lead to some classic matches, something that has been missing from The Lunatic Fringe’s résumé for the past few months. Besides his match with Triple H at Roadblock, Ambrose’s matches have been average at best and it’s probably because we’ve seen it all before, the suicide dives, the diving elbows, switching him to a bad guy could let him mix up his move-set as well as his persona.

If the rumors of an imminent Shield reunion are to be believed then surely Dean Ambrose should be the guy to turn on his brothers in arms on this occasion. He’s almost become the forgotten man from the Hounds of Justice and has sat back while Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins have each had World Title reigns. This could be enough to make him snap and show the WWE Universe exactly why they call him the Lunatic Fringe.

Dean Ambrose has had a solid career in WWE since his 2012 debut, however it feels as though he has a lot more to give and just maybe, a heel turn could be the catalyst to elevate him from an upper mid-card level talent to a bona fide main event star.
