It's wasn't long ago when the female division of WWE was considered to be nothing more than a joke where most of the competitors were chosen on the basis of their looks and the ability to sell WWE's version of reality television ‘Total Divas’ rather than their in-ring abilities.
The situation became so bad that fans started turning on WWE and they used social media as their weapon to provoke WWE officials to change the state of WWE’s Women's Division
However, things quickly changed and after realizing the anger within fans, WWE took many steps to reinstate the lost pride of the female division of the company. Finally, after more than a year of the start of the Divas revolution, we stand at a point where fans just witnessed the pinnacle of this revolution last month when Sasha Banks became the new women's champion.
Her victory was seen as a defining moment for Women's wrestling in WWE and according to Stephanie Mcmahon it all happened because of the fans. During a recent interview given to ESPN Stephanie, the commissioner of Monday Night Raw, spoke about the revolution and credited the fans for making it happen.
She said: “Our fans spoke out. It was a global trend that was so loud and so powerful. It was a cry for our female performers to be given longer match time and to be given more meaningful story lines and to have deeper character development. Our fans said with their voices very loud and clear that we want more from our female performers.”
Stephanie also talked about the current state of the division stating that female wrestlers are proving themselves when given the opportunity while mentioning how they are just getting started
"I feel such a shift in the way our women are portrayed, the opportunity they are given, and when given that opportunity, these women are tearing the house down and stealing the show with every chance they get, Sasha said, 'I'm going to prove that I belong by being so good they can't ignore me.' That just about sums up Sasha Banks and what she has been able to do. The greatest part is these women are only just getting started."
It's notable here that the Diva's revolution trend started after the February 23th episode of Monday Night Raw back in 2015. It featured only one Divas match which saw the team of Nikki Bella and Brie Bella square off against the team of Paige and Emma.
The match lasted only 29 seconds which angered the already displeased fans like never before and they started a social media campaign against WWE using the #GiveDivasAChance hashtag. The backlash became so strong that the hashtag became the top trending tag on Twitter all over the world.
