Brendan Rodgers slates former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson over comments on Steven Gerrard

Sir Alex Ferguson seems to be taking a swing at Liverpool, even after retirement. With different parts of his autobiography being revealed by the papers, there was one bit on which Liverpool’s manager Brendan Rodgers took particular exception to. In his autobiography, Sir Alex says Steven Gerrard was not a top player, this despite him trying to sign Gerrard in 2005.

Rodgers said: “I think everyone who’s seen the comments will think they are harsh.

“I’ve watched Gerrard for many years and recognised he’s a top player, but it’s only when you come in and work with the man that you realise how professional he is on a daily basis.

“His performance level at 33 years of age shows he’s a top, top player. He’s a great talent, a wonderful player and I don’t think anyone could argue against that.”

Additionally, Brendan Rodgers also said that Sir Alex had no old school ethics, where anything said in the dressing room stayed in the dressing room.

“Anyone who’s been in football knows that whatever is said behind closed doors and in the changing room is something you wouldn’t want to hear again,” Rodgers told TalkSport.

“It’s something that’s vitally important. You want to know as a human being that you can speak openly and communication is honest, and hopefully wouldn’t get repeated.

It’s certainly something that in modern time is becoming more difficult. I always felt that years ago you could say those sorts of things, that people were open and honest, but that it would get left behind and you move on.

As time goes on and all the social communication and technologies come along it makes it that bit more difficult. You would like to think you would still have some old school values and ethics that whatever is said you take it on the chin and keep it behind closed doors and move on.”
