It's been a trying couple of weeks for Triple H, R-Truth, and WWE. The beloved former 24/7 Champion was seemingly let go, with his contract reportedly not being renewed. After a week of severe fan backlash, however, the company may have reversed its decision, leaving fans and wrestling insiders divided.
Many believed R-Truth had finished up with WWE, but he returned last night during the tag team match between Cody Rhodes & Jey Uso and John Cena & Logan Paul at Money in the Bank. When asked about the return, Triple H tactfully dodged the question, claiming that it was just "part of the show."
Many have called the WWE CCO out for this comment, believing that the company had backtracked due to fan backlash and then attempted to pass the whole controversy off as a storyline. On X, AEW's Will Washington wondered why Triple H would immediately admit to it being a "work" instead of simply leaving fans to wonder.
AEW heel manager Don Callis responded to this tweet with a short and sarcastic message:
"#DeepThoughts," he wrote.
Backstage reactions to Triple H's comments about R-Truth
If R-Truth's return was in response to fan backlash, it wouldn't be the first time WWE has used such a controversy for storyline purposes. Something very similar happened with The Rock, who almost replaced Cody Rhodes in the main event of WrestleMania 40 until the outcry from fans forced the company to alter course.
Many believe that Triple H's comment about Truth's status is simply WWE/TKO's method of damage control, and Sean Ross Sapp has indicated that this is likely the case. On X/Twitter following Money in the Bank, Sapp revealed that several within the sports entertainment juggernaut believed Truth's departure to be legitimate:
"There is not one person in WWE behind the scenes claiming that the R-Truth contract expiration was a work. Not one. Not even an 'it could have been,'" he wrote.
Controversy now swirls around Triple H and WWE once again, with many in the industry sounding off—including AEW stars. Whether The Game can smooth things over remains to be seen.
