“He's not beating Tom Brady” – Tony Romo delivers verdict on Patrick Mahomes ahead of Super Bowl 2023

Will Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes be the next GOAT in the NFL? According to Rony Romo, the analyst and former quarterback doesn't believe so. With just over a week until Mahomes is set to appear in his third Super Bowl, Romo gave his take on the current NFL headlines.

Now that Tom Brady has announced his retirement, Romo doesn't believe that the Chiefs quarterback is that good yet. Romo said that right now Mahomes is definitely in the top six of NFL quarterbacks but that he will need a few more years on his NFL resume before he is in the conversation with Brady, who won seven Super Bowls.

"If Patrick Mahomes retired right now, he's not beating Tom Brady, but he's in the discussion right after that – even right now. He's in the two-to-six range already. He's not quite two in my opinion yet, but give him a few more years, and he'll be knocking on the door."

This is not the first time that Tony Romo has compared Patrick Mahomes' young career to that of Brady, who played for 23 seasons. Before the two quarterbacks met in Super Bowl LV two years ago, Romo said at the time that if the Chiefs quarterback didn't defeat Tom Brady, he wouldn't catch him in stats and accolades.

"This is the biggest game Patrick Mahomes will ever play in for the rest of his career... If he loses this game, he cannot catch Tom Brady, in my opinion."

But some could argue that being defeated by the best to ever do it could be just what a young NFL quarterback needs to continue with his success. In five seasons as a starter, the Chiefs quarterback won the NFL MVP award, will now play in his third Super Bowl and already has one Lombardi Trophy. He seems to be headed in the right track to being one of the greats.

Patrick Mahomes' average passing yards per game vs. Jalen Hurts' numbers

The Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles will meet in Super Bowl LVII on Feb. 12. The game will feature two of the brightest young quarterbacks in the NFL Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts. The stats and plays that the two can make should make for an interesting game.

And then there were two.

Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles vs Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, who you got?

In 2022, Mahomes averaged 308.8 passing yards per game. That is an impressive number considering that he was able to have that much total offense even with the departure of his top wide receiver Tyreek Hill.

Jalen Hurts averaged 236.7 passing yards per game this season and also averaged 50 rushing yards per game. So, where he lacked in the air he made up for with his legs on the ground.

But all of those stats won't matter as the two quarterbacks lead their teams onto the field in the Super Bowl. They know it will take everything they have to be the one hoisting the Lombardi Trophy after four quarters.
