5 mistakes WWE made at TLC 2019: 6-time champions didn't return, big error made with title matches

WWE TLC 2019 is in the books and it wasn't the worst way to end the show. While Survivor Series was a superior show, TLC was a good card and had some good moments as well. There were, unfortunately, quite a few botches on the show, including the main event, which affected it a bit.

However, the Women's Tag Team titles main eventing the show was the right decision in our view and the fact that Asuka, Charlotte Flair, and Becky Lynch main evented two TLC PPVs in a row is quite incredible. Becky Lynch even set a record, becoming the first woman to main event 4 PPVs in a calendar year (WrestleMania, Extreme Rules, Survivor Series, and TLC).

Even the opener between The New Day and The Revival was great, with Kofi Kingston looking at his best since being WWE Champion and his run early in the year.

#5. Not doing enough to get the crowd engaged due to bad match placement

Bobby Lashley vs Rusev

We would understand if this would be blamed on the superstars - and it partially is - but the company is also to blame what happened. The biggest detriment to TLC 2019 by far was the crowd reactions - or lack thereof. The crowd never got into the groove during the main event and even matches such as Rusev vs Bobby Lashley - which had so much interest heading in, suffered from a lack of crowd reaction.

Perhaps that affected the perception of the matches but the placement of matches on the card makes all the difference when it comes to reactions to the PPV. Unfortunately, WWE got that aspect wrong on the night and the crowd didn't heavily react to too many matches or moments.

#4. No singles titles on the line on the card

This was something that took us by surprise. It was revealed earlier that WWE had no singles championships on the line in the card and we can't remember the last PPV where that happened.

All we know is that it's been a long time and the reason behind it is unknown to us. Perhaps the most surprising instance was Bray Wyatt vs The Miz where The Universal Championship wasn't on the line.

The referee even showed The Miz the title when being handed it by Wyatt and The A-Lister comically explained that the title isn't on the line. Was it done by intention? Then there's the case of the United States Championship and the Intercontinental Championship.

The US title has Rey Mysterio, AJ Styles, Randy Orton, and even potentially Ricochet, and Drew McIntyre in the mix. There could have been a good match there. Shinsuke Nakamura was rumored to be facing Braun Strowman in the Intercontinental title match but The Monster Among Men is currently injured, scrapping the match.

Having no singles title matches on the show was a big detriment and it's certainly a big error WWE made.

#3. The Viking Raiders match, KFC table, and the disappointing challengers

This happened

The Viking Raiders held an open challenge for the RAW Tag Team Championship. Ringside was a "KFC table" where four "fans" had the best seat in the house and the jealousy of the crowd as they were supposedly chomping down on KFC.

They didn't eat anything, for starters and the ad placement was blatant and wasn't a good look when you have serious champions like The Viking Raiders trying to tear house. The RAW Tag Team Champions have done good for themselves, but matches like these don't help.

Also, The OC being the challengers was a bit too predictable. The right option would have been the 6-time Tag Team Champions The Usos, whose return would be perfectly timed, even if they weren't going to win. Perhaps they aren't ready for a return yet, but there's no denying that teasing a feud between The Usos and The Viking Raiders would be far more exciting than what we're about to get now.

#2. Bobby Lashley winning

The feud continues...

WON had reported that Bobby Lashley suffered an arm injury recently. The assumption following that would be that Rusev would win, ending the storyline and writing Lashley off TV till he recovers.

They could have renewed the feud from there, but from the look of things, Lashley will be working through the injury (as many superstars do) to continue this storyline. Bobby Lashley winning served the objective of extending this rivalry, but was it necessary to do so?

The purpose of the storyline is to get Rusev over and while we understand that it's eventually going to happen, it was probably a better decision to end the feud at TLC 2019. It hasn't been a popular one, though it has admittedly garnered a lot of interest. Regardless, it hasn't gotten a very positive reception.

WWE made a mistake by having Lashley go over in the match. The tables stipulation was one to protect Rusev from being pinned and he'll get his comeuppance eventually, but it should have been at TLC.

#1. Giving the TLC stipulation to Baron Corbin vs Roman Reigns

A temporary stable?
Ad

This was a decision we didn't understand at all and after the match, we're yet to get our answer. Why was the TLC stipulation given to the Roman Reigns-Baron Corbin match? It was a grudge rivalry and deserved a stipulation - but not a TLC match.

To begin with, WWE already had a worthy TLC match - The Kabuki Warriors vs Becky Lynch & Charlotte Flair. That was the right choice for the stipulation as well as the main event. It felt as though the TLC stipulation was wasted on the Reigns-Corbin match as ladders were hardly utilized and there wasn't a title hanging above the ring.

It did serve the purpose of fueling the brawl that would be seen twice in the show later on and we anticipate that Reigns will align with The New Day, and Shorty Gable (possibly Mustafa Ali as well) to counter the temporary stable of King Corbin, Dolph Ziggler, The Revival, and perhaps Robert Roode when he returns next month.
