5 WWE records that could be broken in 2020

The Women's Revolution has pushed several records into the spotlight over the past few years, with Charlotte Flair already breaking Trish Stratus' long-standing record and now being seen as the most decorated female wrestler in the history of WWE.

Whilst Charlotte's record-breaking streak hasn't gone unnoticed, there are a number of other long-standing records that could be broken in the next twelve months since WWE is pushing their "history-making" exploits more than ever.

The wrestling world is built on records and a superstar is seemingly only as good as their amount of Championship reigns, which means that 2020 could see a number of WWE's biggest records finally broken.

#5 Women's Royal Rumble records

Many records could be broken in the Women's Royal Rumble match

There have been just two Women's Royal Rumbles and WWE is now preparing for the third next weekend. Asuka and Becky Lynch have been victorious but aside from the woman who came out on top, several other records could be broken as part of The Women's Royal Rumble on January 26th.

Liv Morgan's eight-second cameo in the 2019 Royal Rumble could easily be beaten this year by someone else that WWE wants to be buried. Santino Marella's record of just one second in the men's Rumble will never be beaten, but the women's definitely could.

Most Eliminations in the match is a record that is jointly held by Michelle McCool from 2018 and Charlotte from 2019 since both women-only eliminated five other women. This means that the record could easily be broken by someone like Nia Jax if she makes her return or even Shayna Baszler if she is one of the surprise entrants in the match like many fans have suggested.

#4 SmackDown Women's Championship reign

Will Bayley break Charlotte's record?

Charlotte Flair holds a number of records in WWE, one that many fans may not recall is the fact that Charlotte was the longest-reigning SmackDown Women's Champion with her 146-day reign back in 2017.

Charlotte's reign ran from November through to April when Carmella cashed in her Money in the Bank contract and came close to breaking Charlotte's record with a 131-day reign. Bayley has since held the Championship for 140 days, but Charlotte is still the record holder with the added six days.

Bayley is the current titleholder and has a 96-day reign behind her with no match currently announced for The Royal Rumble which means that she could be in with a chance to breaking one of Charlotte's records.

It's also worth noting that Bayley already holds the record for the most days combined as Champion over two reigns with 236 days, Becky Lynch is her closest competition with 216 days, but since Lynch is now over on Raw, there's not much chance of her breaking that record any time soon.

#3 Dean Ambrose's United States Championship reign

Dean Ambrose's record could be broken this year

Under the WWE umbrella, Dean Ambrose is seen as the longest-reigning United States Champion of the modern era after holding the title for 351 days back when The Shield were finding their feet in WWE. Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins were Tag Team Championships at the same time after the trio won the titles at Extreme Rules in 2013 and Ambrose then went on to rarely defend his title.

Ambrose was thrown into a number of six-man tag team matches alongside his teammates throughout the next year, which meant that many fans forgot that Ambrose even had a Championship. After AJ Lee left the company back in 2015, WWE pushed Nikki Bella in order to eliminate her record Divas Championship reign, it's easy to see the company doing the same thing after Ambrose departed WWE last year and made his way over to AEW.

The United States Championship currently sits around the waist of Andrade, who could definitely be boosted by a lengthy reign with a mid-card title.

#2 Ric Flair's Championship reign record

Will John Cena finally break Ric Flair's record?

Ric Flair has been seen as WWE's highest reigning world champion for the past few decades, but the 16-time World Champion had his reign record equaled by John Cena back at The Royal Rumble in 2017 and now the former Champion could return in 2020 and wipe Flair's name from the record books.

Cena didn't wrestle at all on pay-per-view in 2019, which is the first tie he's gone an entire calendar year without wrestling on a large stage for WWE, so in 2020 he could be looking to make up for that. It's obvious that Cena will be part of WrestleMania, last year he appeared to taunt Elias but this year he could return and lay down a challenge to whoever is World Champion at the time and take Flair's record as his own.

Cena is the only star who is close to Flair's reign record since Triple H would be next in line as a 14-time World Champion, followed by Randy Orton on 13 Championships and then Edge who has been rumored to make a return in the coming months, but he would need six Championship reigns this year since he's currently an 11-time World Champion.

#1 Roman Reigns' Royal Rumble elimination record

Roman Reigns' record could be broken this year
Ad

There is some argument about who actually holds the Royal Rumble elimination record since Roman Reigns eliminated 12 stars in 2014 to break Kane's long-standing record, but at The Greatest Royal Rumble back in 2018, Braun Strowman eliminated 13 stars to win the 50-man match.

That being said, Kane and Roman Reigns' records came in the annual 30-man match and the fact that there were 20 more stars meant that it would be easier to eliminate more men. So, Roman Reigns' 12 man elimination record will definitely be on the table next weekend when WWE presents the 2020 Royal Rumble because one man expected to outlast 29 others.

With Brock Lesnar entering The Rumble at number one, it's possible that the current WWE Champion could be looking to eliminate a number of stars en route to a victory to prove that he is the most dominant man in WWE currently. There aren't many men who could get Lesnar over the top rope, so this record is at serious risk of changing hands next weekend.
