WWE Royal Rumble 2019: 5 reasons why Finn Balor will defeat Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship

You're probably thinking: There's no possible way that Finn Balor will defeat Brock Lesnar. High chance is that you're probably right. But in the world of wrestling, never say never. Funnily enough, the last two great matches that Brock Lesnar had in recent times happened to be against two smaller opponents - AJ Styles in 2017 and Daniel Bryan in 2018.

The good part was that Lesnar really sold for them. It also wasn't his generic quick squash match as many predicted it would be. While there is a possibility of it being a squash match, you can probably expect a similar effort from Finn Balor, taking Lesnar to his limits.

Either way, as unbelievable as it may sound, we're going to make a case as to why Finn Balor will beat Brock Lesnar and reclaim the Universal Championship. This would make him the second two-time Universal Champion after Lesnar himself.

#5 Brock Lesnar is returning to UFC

UFC 226: Miocic v Cormier

After Jon Jones' triumphant return at the end of 2018, he called out Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier. Remember that Cormier had a confrontation with Brock Lesnar at UFC 226 after winning the championship.

He had an easy title defence in between, and it seems like rather than avenging his loss to Jones, he wants to take the Brock Lesnar fight. Who can blame him? He has maybe one fight left in his career and he probably wants that big Lesnar payday. He certainly deserves it, and it could be happening sooner than we think.

Moreover, Jon Jones already has an opponent scheduled in for March, so the Lesnar-Cormier fight is looking more and more likely. With Lesnar choosing to focus on the UFC Heavyweight title, he may very well drop the title and ride off into the sunset.

#4. Finn Balor getting pushed again

Ad

There have been rumours of Finn Balor getting pushed for a while now. It became clear in December that he was getting pushed, and now in hindsight, it's clear that this was done because he was the backup plan in the case of Braun Strowman being unable to compete.

WWE's worst fears did come true when Strowman was clearly unable to compete, and Balor was the man who replaced him. Even so, win or lose, Balor is receiving that big push again, and it became clear when he had that interaction with Vince McMahon.

He told Vince "You never believed in me", and that made him an instant underdog. For the first time since Summer of 2016, Balor is getting that big push. The push could very well be so big that he ends up toppling The Beast Incarnate and becoming a two-time WWE Universal Champion.

#3. Best underdog story to slay The Beast

As great as Roman Reigns was, the truth is that he was no underdog. Fans knew from the start that he was the chosen one and would overcome all obstacles. As a result, they were unable to buy him as an underdog and it ended up backfiring on WWE.

Finn Balor, on the other hand, is a far more credible underdog, and in that regard, he would be an even more ideal choice than Seth Rollins to topple The Beast from his throne.

#2. The Demon needs to be protected

Ad

We haven't seen The Demon since Summerslam 2018. Prior to that, we hadn't seen the Demon since October 2017. With such large gaps, it's obvious that the Demon only comes out on special occasions.

What bigger occasion than the biggest match of his career against Brock Lesnar? They could play this into the story and The Demon Balor could end up being the one to slay The Beast. After all, they would want to protect the Demon persona.

#1. To mark the end of the part-timer dominance

Ad

For the last few years, we've all been guilty of complaining of WWE's excessive use of part-time superstars. It works fine with John Cena, because he appears a little more frequently when he does have a run, and he actually puts over younger superstars.

With The Undertaker winding down (or is he?), Goldberg retired, Triple H in an on-screen role and Shawn Michaels not wanting to wrestle again, it seems like we're finally coming to the conclusion of the part-timers' dominance.

This is the right move as it's time to put the spotlight on the younger superstars. While we obviously will see part-timers time and again, it's likely that they won't occupy the big spots on the big stage anymore. Balor beating Brock Lesnar at Royal Rumble would most definitely mark the end of the part-timers' dominance in WWE. The newer generation will finally get the time to shine.
