Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is on a hiatus indefinitely and it has not yet been confirmed when the series will conclude.

The anime television series ran from September 2023 to March 2024. The first season of the anime series had 28 episodes that covered 60 chapters from the series’ manga volumes. As of September 2024, there is no official announcement for the second season and the manga is on an indefinite break.

The Japanese manga series was created by Tsukasa Abe and writer Kanehito Yamada. Its chapters were compiled into 13 tankōbon volumes as of April 2024. It began serialization in Shogakukan's shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Sunday in April 2020.

Plot

After defeating the Demon King, the triumphant four — warrior Eisen, priest Heiter, hero Himmel, and mage Frieren - heads back home before splitting up. When the time arrives to say farewell to one another, the group reminisces over their ten-year adventure. However, elves see time differently, thus Frieren watches as her friends gradually die one by one.

Heiter succeeds in pushing Fern, a young human apprentice, upon Frieren before he dies. Motivated by the elf's obsession with gathering an array of magic spells, the two set out on a pointless expedition, revisiting the locations that the legendary heroes had visited. Frieren eventually comes to terms with her regrets over lost chances of forging closer relationships with her now-deceased friends while on their travels.

Anime

The manga's ninth volume's cover revealed in September 2022 that the series will have an anime adaptation. It eventually turned out to be a Madhouse-produced television show. Beyond Asia, Crunchyroll obtained a license for the series. The series was licensed in Southeast Asia by Muse Communication.

From October 11, 2023, until March 24, 2024, a series of eleven brief episodes titled Sōsō no Frieren: no Mahō was released on Toho Animation's YouTube page and the official X and TikTok accounts.

Manga

The manga had a circulation of more than 22 million copies by June 2024. The series was awarded the 69th Shogakukan Manga Award and the 48th Kodansha Manga Award (in the shōnen category) in 2024.

It also won the 14th Manga Taishō and the 25th annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize's New Creator Prize in 2021. The American Library Association's Graphic Novels and Comics Round Table's 2022 "Best Graphic Novels for Adults" list placed it among the top 10 graphic novels. There are a total of 13 tankōbon volumes in the manga before the series went on an indefinite hiatus in May 2024.
