Yoshiyuki Sadamoto is the author of the Neon Genesis Evangelion manga series, and he is also the illustrator of the manga.

Yoshiyuki wrote the Neon Genesis Evangelion, the first volume of which was published on December 26, 1994, and the last one on June 4, 2013. It is one of the best Shonen and Mecha anime series that follows the story of young teen Shinki Ikari, who pilots the Bio-Machine Mecha named Evangelion to fight against the Angels who want to destroy humanity.

Yoshiyuki Sadamoto was born in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, on January 29, 1962. He attended Tokyo Zokei University, an innovative university based on courses that taught students about the fast-changing technological development of modern culture in 1966. He married to Mako Takaha in 1988 and has two children.

Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's career as a manga artist

Yoshiyuki Sadamoto started his manga career at university when he did an internship for Daicon IV Opening Animation and worked for Akita Publishing Co. This path led him into the Telecom Animation Film industry, where he learned all the skills under the guidance of Yasuo Otsuka, who used to work for some of the biggest studios, such as Studio Ghibli, Nippon Animation, and Toei Animation.

Yoshiyuki Sadamoto work timeline:

  1. Yoshiyuki's first work was Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise, in 1987, where he worked as a character designer.

  2. Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, which came in 1990-1991, worked as a character designer in this series.
  3. The Neon Genesis Evangelion series is his first work, in which he wrote 14 volumes. He also illustrated the series, which is loved by fans who still name it one of the best Shonen series.

  4. FLCL (Fooly Cooly) is another series in which he worked as a character designer.

  5. Diebuster (Gunbuster 2): He worked as a character designer once again in this series, which is more of an action series.

  6. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006): It is said to be one of the most underrated anime movies of all time which is directed by Mamoru Hosoda, in which Sadamoto worked as the character designer based on time-travel.

  7. Summer Wars: He worked as the character designer in this film, too, which is based on romance, a slice of life, and some drama.

  8. Wolf Children is another amazing storyline movie that is based on wolves and the human world. Once again Sadamoto used his amazing creativity in this anime series which made the anime one of the most heart-touching.

Yoshiyuki Sadamoto is one of the founding members of Gainax Anime Studio, alongside famous manga artists like Toshio Okada, Takami Akai, Hidaki Anno, Shinji Higuchi, and Yasuhiro Takeda. Unfortunately, in 2024, the studio closed due to bankruptcy, but it was notable as one of the better anime studios.
