It all came down to Trout's hitting versus Shohei Ohtani's pitching in a battle of the Los Angeles Angels teammates. Ohtani was able to strike out Trout in the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs and the USA trailing 3-2, sealing the victory for Japan.

Trout was gracious in the loss and spoke with USA Today commentator Bob Nightengale after the game to express his views. As a true representative of the sport, Trout acknowledged that Shohei Ohtani was the better player on the day and produced the necessary shots.

MLB fans had the opportunity to watch their favorite duel between Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani

Although Ohtani didn't formally declare that he was playing for Team Japan until after the last MLB season, he still planned ahead to participate in the World Baseball Classic. Trout was the first player to publicly commit to Team USA back in the summer of 2017. Well, the two colleagues did talk about the prospect of competing against one another.

Following their pregame embrace behind the batting cage, Trout and Ohtani led their respective teams in a single file toward home plate for the introductions while holding the flags of their respective countries, Trout down the right-field line and Ohtani down the left.

Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout's fight, who are both Angels colleagues, more than lived up to the hype. Trout was gracious in the loss, giving Ohtani the opening round in what appeared to be an exciting rivalry in the making, even though there had to be a winner and a loser.

The thrilling game came to a close in a thrilling ninth inning, as Ohtani outperformed Mike Trout to secure his nation's unparalleled third championship in the history of the competition.
