New York Yankees fans reacted when they noticed left fielder Alex Verdugo visibly in pain after his at-bat. The Bronx Bombers started their opening game of a three-game series against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field.
In the Monday night game, Verdugo hit a single in the third inning and also scored a run shortly after, along with Anthony Volpe, on Gleyber Torres’s double, giving the Yankees a 2-0 lead.
Verdugo again came to the plate in the fifth inning, hitting a groundout against Rangers pitcher Jack Leiter. After getting out while running the bases, he appeared to be in pain. Even back in the dugout, he was seen rubbing his back with a look of discomfort on his face.
Yankees fans were quick to react to the moment and some fans shared their sarcastic reactions on X/Twitter:
“Shouldn’t risk further injury. Just let him rest for the rest of the season,” a fan said.
“60 day IL let's fkn goooooo,” another fan said.
“Best for him to not push it. 60 day IL asap please,” another fan wrote.
Other fans reacted by asking to replace Verdugo with outfielder Jasson Dominguez:
“Time to call up Jasson,” one comment read.
“End our pain,” another fan said.
“IL and call up Dominguez,” one fan wrote.
Alex Verdugo has been having a struggling 2024 season, with a .234 batting average and 117 hits in 499 at-bats. Since the 2024 All-Star break, Verdugo has recorded only one home run and 10 RBIs.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone opens up about Jasson Dominguez’s call-up as Alex Verdugo struggles
During Monday’s game, Verdugo recorded one hit in four at-bats with one run. On Sunday, the New York Yankees revealed their September call-up choices, where many hoped the team would call up Jasson Dominguez to replace Verdugo in left field.
However, the Bronx Bombers decided to stick with Verdugo for the time being. Manager Aaron Boone opened up about Dominguez on Sunday (via Fox Sports):
"Certainly in the conversation. Will remain in the conversation moving forward. When he [Jasson Dominguez] comes up here, you're going to want to play him every day. So, he'll continue to remain in that conversation."
The New York Yankees (80-58) currently top the AL East standings. After winning the opener 8-4, they will face the Rangers (65-73) again on Tuesday in the second game of their series.
