Houston Astros and Team Venezuela infielder Jose Altuve had to undergo surgery and will miss the start of the MLB regular season due to an injury sustained during the quarterfinals of the World Baseball Classic (WBC) against Team USA. Altuve was hit on the right arm by a wild pitch from Daniel Bard.

Jose Altuve has been an integral part of the Astros batting line-up for the past 12 seasons. Effectively, he has become one of the best second basemen in the game. His presence at the plate is incredible. Altuve is one of baseball's best leadoff hitters, with a career average of .307 and almost 2,000 hits.

Daniel Bard expressed regret over the wild pitch, hoping that the former MVP would soon be able to return to the field.

"I feel terrible. He's a great player. You want to see great players on the field, even if I have to play against him. I want to play against the best. I wish him, hopefully, a quick recovery. I know it will be a minute,'' Bard said after the game.

Reports have since emerged that the eight-time All-Star will need at least eight weeks to recover from the injury. Houston Astros fans were disappointed at the prospect of their star player missing a chunk of the MLB season. Some fans even called the WBC a pointless tournament.

Jose Altuve's long injury history

Jose Altuve has quite a history of injuries. The broken thumb is the latest addition to the list of persistent knee and hamstring injuries Altuve has faced in the past.

In 2018, he suffered a right knee injury that put him on the shelf for two months. He completed the season as the Astros' designated hitter. In 2019, he suffered a major hamstring pull that forced him out for a month.
