Retired MLB icon Jose Canseco is not shy about sharing his thoughts on social media, often in scathing terms. After Aaron Boone was extended by the Yankees on Friday, the skipper found himself squarely in Canseco's crosshairs.
From unorthodox political endorsements to condemnations of the US school system, there is rarely a dull moment on Jose Canseco's X account. On Friday, Canseco lambasted Boone and the Yankees for agreeing on a club option to keep the manager around in 2024.
In a now-deleted post, Canseco quoted the old adage 'insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results'. Ostensibly, the desired "result" is a World Series win, an objective that the Yankees fell short of after taking the Los Angeles Dodgers to five games in the Fall Classic.
In a scouting report that was leaked, the Dodgers considered Boone's New York Yankees to be "talent over fundamentals". This theory was backed up by the failure of Aaron Boone's Yankees to executive several routine plays, especially in Game 5, where it cost them the series.
"Oh my god this is just a gut wrenching and so satisfying read. Dodgers had the same scouting report as any fan that watched every game! All the dodgers had to do to scout the Yankees was listen to me ranting and pulling my hair out all season. Worst outfield shifting team, I’ve been banging that drum since I saw it bite them in person at Fenway. And all ya gotta do is put the ball in play." - Jomboy
The manager of the New York Yankees since 2018, Boone is no stranger to criticism. Last season, the Yankees barely edged out the Boston Red Sox for the worst record in the AL East. After the result, many believed that Aaron Boone would be fired, but he wasn't.
Yankees GM Brian Cashman still believes Aaron Boone is his guy
The feeling of Yankees fans towards their manager of six years is certainly mixed. However, at the top, Boone enjoys the full confidence of the team's executive corps. As GM Brian Cashman said at the ongoing GM meetings:
"I'm a big Aaron Boone fan. I think he's a great manager and I think we're lucky to have him"
Jose Canseco's claims certainly feature a whiff of truth. However, the Yankees did have a tremendous regular season. Unfortunately for Boone, the postseason will always be the measure by which he is assessed.
