After more than 48 hours since it began, Game 1 of KBO's Korean Series finally finished with the Kia Tigers triumphing over the Samsung Lions with a 5-1 score line. The matchup began on Monday in Korea and was resumed on Wednesday afternoon locally after the weather improved in the area.

The Lions were leading the opening game of KBO's biggest series before rain fell on the Tigers' home stadium in Gwangju, south of the capital Seoul. Samsung led the contest after Kim Hun-gon smashed a solo shot off KBO ERA leader James Naile of the Tigers in the top of the sixth inning.

Game 1 was a hotly anticipated matchup as it featured the league's ERA leader in Naile facing off against the league's wins leader in the form of Samsung Lions ace Park Jin-man. The two hurlers carried on through five scoreless innings before Kim made a breakthrough.

When the contest resumed, the Lions were caught lacking as Kia went on to score four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Tigers would take on one more run in the bottom of the eighth as they limited the Lions after the resumption and ended the game at 5-1 in favor of the home team, Kia.

Game 2 was originally scheduled for Tuesday in Korea, but due to the terrible weather in Gwangju, it was moved to Wednesday night as part of a double-header between the two teams.

Historical game suspension in KBO Korean Series

For the first time since its inception in 1982, a game in the KBO postseason has been suspended. The weather in the city of Gwangju, home of the Kia Tigers, was unplayable for the participants, leading to the postponement of Game 1 and eventually Game 2.

History seemed to be smiling at the Samsung Lions when they led on Monday night against the Kia Tigers. After all, in the past five opening games of the Korean Series that applied the home-away format, the team that was the lower seed and played away won the matchup. However, the Tigers flipped the contest after it was resumed.

They are now poised to win as history is on their side, being the winners of the opening game of the Korean Series. In 40 occurrences, 29 have gone on to win it all.
