Things are starting to spiral out of control for the New York Mets with the recent news about Justin Verlander. It's being reported that the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner will start the season on the IL.

Verlander is dealing with a low-grade teres major strain. The teres major is the armpit muscle connecting the scapula and the humerus. The team will monitor him as he works through this injury.

Right-handed pitcher Tylor Megill will take the spot for the injured Verlander. Megill appeared in 15 games for the Mets last season, going 4-2 with a 5.15 ERA and a 1.246 WHIP.

Until Verlander undergoes an MRI, there won't be a timetable for his return. Verlander more recently missed the entirety of the 2021 season while he underwent Tommy John surgery. For a fanbase that was hesitant to hear their front office sign a pitcher in his 40s, this was the last thing they wanted to hear.

"Is there anything more Opening Day Mets than this?" one fan tweeted.
"You've got to be kidding me," another fan tweeted.

New York Mets fans have grown accustomed to something going wrong with their team, especially on the pitching side. They were already down one starting pitcher in Jose Quintana, and now Justin Verlander adds to that list.

Things are starting to look bleak for a team that built up so much momentum in the offseason. The Mets need to get healthy and do it fast. The fanbase hopes Justin Verlander's injury is minor and he can return quickly.

The New York Mets are already dealing with Jose Quintana's rib injury. The right-handed starter had a stress fracture in his ribs. He underwent bone graft surgery to deal with the issue and isn't expected back until at least July.

The team's biggest injury comes in the closer position. All-Star closer Edwin Diaz tore his patellar tendon at the World Baseball Classic. He's unlikely to return at all this season.

Diaz took the MLB world by storm with his ability to come in and shut down games. Losing him for the season was a punch to the gut for the entire organization.

Things looked a lot different for this team just a few weeks ago. Now the momentum they've built up in the offseason has died down. They can't afford any more injuries in order to be competitive this year.
