New York Mets fans react to team scouting free-agent relief pitcher Zack Britton: "Never hurts to have another lefty", "I’m all for a Britton signing"

Free agent relief pitcher Zack Britton held a workout for interested teams Wednesday, and the New York Mets were in attendance. The left-hander remains unsigned as teams have begun organizing for Spring Training to prepare for the 2023 season. However, Britton remained hopeful of hanging on with a major league team for at least another season.

Zack Britton was a feared closer for a different team the current New York Mets manager Buck Showalter once led: the Baltimore Orioles. From 2014-2016, Britton had 120 saves and two All-Star appearances. However, injuries and wear took their toll. Britton lost his closing job in 2017 and has toiled as a middle reliever, mostly for the New York Yankees, since.

Britton has pitched in 25 games over the past two seasons, getting two outs total over a miniscule three games with the Yankees last season. It's not known how much the 35-year-old has left to give, hence Wednesday's workout.

While not many fans feel strongly one way or another about Britton, many would prefer another relief arm that is still on the market: Matt Moore. Moore, a one-time prized prospect of the Tampa Bay Rays, never set the world on fire the way many hoped. Outside of an All-Star appearance in 2013 in which he went 17-4 with a 3.29 ERA -- and a major league-leading 17 wild pitches -- Moore never developed into the star many thought he would.

However, the Texas Rangers converted Moore into a full-time reliever last season, and the 33-year-old responded with a 5-2 record with a career-best 1.95 ERA. He is still available on the free agent market.

Most New York Mets fans seem to be taking the news with a resounding shrug. After a winter full of amazing bank-breaking deals, word of possibly extending a contract to Zack Britton doesn't move the needle much one way or another.

A voice cried out from the heavens, demanding to know what the New York Mets could possibly be thinking by even looking at Britton. Hey, passion can be a good thing, sometimes.

Does Zack Britton have anything to offer the New York Mets?

Zack Britton had a -0.1 WAR last season. The question remains: after a solid major league career that bordered on superstardom, does he have anything left to offer big-league clubs?
