Luis Severino made his long-awaited season debut on Sunday. He allowed just one run as the New York Yankees beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-1.

The Yankees activated Severino from the injured list prior to Sunday's game. The eight-year MLB veteran had been sidelined because of a lat strain he suffered in Spring Training.

Luis Severino threw just 4.2 innings pitched because he was on a 75-pitch count. He surrendered four hits and one walk while striking out five. The right-hander allowed one "earned" run, which came on a curious first-inning play.

A flyball down the right field line was initially ruled a foul ball. The call was overturned and Reds infielder Spencer Steer was credited with an RBI double that scored Jonathan India from first base.

The play incensed New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone and temporarily gave Cincinnati the lead. However, New York scored four runs between the fifth and seventh inning to rally for the win.

Luis Severino is an important part of the Yankees' rotation. They are glad to have him back. The 29-year-old has posted a 50-29 record and a 3.39 ERA over seven seasons.

Injuries have ravaged the Yankees' starting rotation. It has forced the team to use Clarke Schmidt and Jhony Brito as their starters early in the season.

Severino's return brings more stability to the Yankees' starting rotation. The team now has three of their projected opening day starters back in the lineup. Of course, Severino has dealt with a lot of injuries in recent years. It's hard to tell how long the team will be able to count on him.

Severino has been one of the Yankees' most reliable starters since joining their rotation in 2015. His best year was in 2018, when he went 19-8, had a 3.39 ERA, and was chosen to play in his second straight All-Star game.
