The New York Yankees faced the Kansas City Royals in Game 1 of the ALDS on Saturday at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees, who won the AL East division, didn't have to navigate through wildcard rounds like the Royals, who had to take down the Baltimore Orioles to reach here.

Reigning AL Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole (8-5 3.41 ERA) started on the mound for the Yankees, while right-handed ace Michael Wacha (13-8 3.35) started for the Royals.

1st inning: Cole retired Royals hitters with ease while Wacha allowed a walk to Gleyber Torres and a double to Juan Soto but was able to get out of the jam without giving up any run.

2nd inning: The Royals struck first in the game. Cole allowed a single to Salvador Perez, walked Yuli Gurriel and while MJ Melendez hit another single, Perez was thrown out at home, taking away a potential run from the Royals. However, Tommy Pham's sac-fly to center field allowed Gurriel to score the first run of the game.

In the Yankees' half, Wacha retired the hitters 1-2-3.

3rd inning: Cole redeemed himself in this inning, retiring two straight hitters before giving up a single to Michael Massey. However, he retired the next hitter. Meanwhile, the Yankees' offense responded with a two-run home run from Gleyber Torres to take a 2-1 lead in the game.

4th inning: Cole allowed a two-run home run to Melendez, upon which the Royals retook the lead 3-2. Wacha once again got into a jam with runners in scoring position. However, Alex Verdugo fouled out to third to end the inning.

5th inning: Cole started the fifth, retiring three straight hitters. Meanwhile, Wacha was pulled out of the game after he walked Torres. Angel Zerpa, who replaced him on the mound, allowed a single to Soto, followed by two straight walks that drove in one run, as the Yankees tied the game 3-3. That was it for Zerpa, who was replaced by John Schreiber.

Schreiber retired two hitters before giving up a walk to Anthony Volpe, which allowed Aaron Judge to come home as the Yankees took a 4-3 lead in the game.

6th inning: After Gerrit Cole gave up a single to Gurriel, he was replaced by Tim Hill on the mound. A throwing error by Volpe allowed Gurriel to be safe at third, who then was brought home on a two-run RBI hit by Garrett Hampson, as the Royals take a 5-4 lead.

The Yankees tied the game 5-5 in the bottom half on Austin Wells' RBI single.

7th inning: Against Michael Lorenzen, the Yankees again retook the lead as Vergugo's RBI single drove in Jazz Chisholm Jr. to give the team a 6-5 lead.

8th inning: No runs were scored in either half of the inning as the Yankees bullpen didn't succumb to pressure.

9th inning: The Kansas City Royals needed a run to score to at least force extra innings. However, Luke Weaver held on, retiring three straight, including two strikeouts, to win the game 6-5.
