The San Francisco Giants busted out the lumber against the Chicago White Sox on Thursday, smashing five home runs in a 16-6 victory at Guaranteed Rate Field.

The Giants hit 12 homers in the three-game series, taking two out of three in Chicago after mustering up just three round trippers in going 1-2 against the New York Yankees to open the season.

The three-game barrage immediately vaulted the Giants into the league lead with 15 homers. The power surge also placed San Francisco eighth all-time for home runs through a team's first six games of a season.

The San Francisco Giants thumped the Chicago White Sox 12-3 in the series opener before the 16-6 win in Thursday's finale. In between, the White Sox managed a 7-3 victory.

San Francisco has run frigidly cold or scorchingly hot through its first six games. In the series at Yankee Stadium, the Giants sandwiched two shutout losses around a 7-5 win. The peaks and valleys have many a member of Giants Nation feeling a little queasy in their stomachs.

Thursday's outburst tied the franchise record for most home runs in a three-game series, a mark that goes back to April, 1961, against the then-Milwaukee Braves.

Highlighting the big bashes on Thursday was a grand slam by J.D. Davis, and the first major league homer by Rule-5 selection Blake Sabol. Also hitting homers were Michael Conforto, Mike Yastrzemski and Wilmer Flores.

The San Francisco Giants' outburst against the Chicago White Sox brought to mind the days when Giants outfielder — and widely accused steroid user — Barry Bonds hit an MLB single-season record 73 home runs in 2001. Rumors at the time purported that San Francisco had a "cheating lab" tucked away in the bowels of the stadium in order to juice their sluggers to mammoth size.

Many are questioning whether the Giants brought the lab on the road to Chicago.

And yet, there are still a few fans out there who will always nitpick that a team didn't accomplish enough despite Herculean feats. Call it human nature.

Wednesday's result is not reason for excessive optimism on the part of the San Francisco Giants, nor excessive panic from the Chicago White Sox.

Both teams have won three games this season, with the Giants having lost three and the White Sox four. Both squads reside in the middle of the pack in their divisions.
