The results of the 2025 MLB Draft Lottery, which took place during the league's Winter Meetings in Dallas, have finally been announced. Baseball executives, managers and other staff gathered at the Hilton Anatole Hotel.
The Washington Nationals secured the top pick, despite having the fourth-best odds to land the first overall pick. The highest odds for the top pick were held by the Miami Marlins and the Colorado Rockies, both with a 22.45% chance.
The Marlins ended up having the seventh spot, while the Rockies managed to stay in the top six, landing in the fourth spot. Several MLB fans were not happy with their team’s rankings and took to Reddit to express their frustration.
“What a f**king joke,” one fan commented.
“Worst team in the history of baseball gets a number 10 pick. Being a White Sox fan is fun,” another fan said.
“If you’re a White Sox, Rockies, Angels, or Marlins fan, this is so f**ked,” another wrote.
Many other fans continued to express their views on the 2025 MLB Draft Lottery results.
“The MLB can go f**k itself,” a comment reads.
“This may be the luckiest thing to ever happen to the Seattle Mariners, holy shit,” another comment reads.
“Ethan Holliday, you ARE a Washington National,” someone wrote.
In the MLB Draft Lottery, all teams that missed the playoffs are entered into a draw to determine the top six picks in next year’s draft. However, not all non-playoff teams are eligible every year, some can be excluded due to specific rules.
Chicago White Sox, with the worst record in the 2024 season will have the 10th pick
For the 2025 MLB Draft Lottery, only 16 of the 18 non-playoff teams were eligible, with the Chicago White Sox and Oakland Athletics being ineligible.
Aside from the White Sox and the Athletics, all other teams that missed the playoffs were eligible for the lottery and entered the drawing to determine the first six picks. Now that the top six picks are decided, the remaining teams are ranked based on their regular-season performance.
The Chicago White Sox had the worst performance in MLB history this past season, with a 41–121 record. The team received a lottery pick in the 2024 MLB Draft.
However, because it is a "payor club," a team that gives rather than receives revenue-sharing dollars is not allowed to have lottery picks in consecutive years.
