With Opening Day less than a week away, the New York Yankees have provided Anthony Volpe with another shot to show what he can do. The 21-year-old has been red-hot since the beginning of spring training. Aaron Boone's latest lineup card has him in his preferred position (shortstop) and in the leadoff spot.

Volpe is the New York Yankees' number one prospect and is ranked the number five prospect in the league. The organization selected him in the first round of the 2019 MLB draft and he has gradually worked his way up the ladder.

The young right-hander is already a fan-favorite in New York. Although he is yet to play a game in the majors, fans love his style of play and how he approaches the game.

Yankees fans took to Twitter to share their excitement after once again seeing Volpe leading off.

It's understandable why Yankees fans are keen to see Anthony Volpe in the big leagues. The young infielder has developed faster than expected. He has impressed his coaches and teammates during his short stint with the team in Florida.

Overall, Volpe has an impressive .393 on-base percentage and a .967 OPS. In just 47 at-bats, he has recorded three home runs, five RBIs, 13 hits, 10 runs and five stolen bases.

The battle for the starting shortstop position has dragged on throughout the offseason. Many believed that Isiah Kiner-Falefa's experience would carry him over the finish line. Oswald Peraza also had a strong finish to the 2022 season. He has a .306/.404/.429 slash line after 18 MLB games.

Last season, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, DJ LeMahieu, Marwin Gonzalez, Oswaldo Cabrera, Oswald Peraza and Gleyber Torres all had spells in the shortstop position.

Age may be one factor working against the 21-year-old Anthony Volpe. It is noteworthy that Derek Jeter made his MLB debut at the age of 21. He went on to win five World Series over an illustrious 20-year career with the New York Yankees.
