The New York Yankees might be interested in a reunion with reliever Chad Green

For several years, Chad Green served as a reliable set-up man in the Yankees bullpen. Now, after suffering from bullpen challenges two years after parting ways with the reliever, there may be a desire to get Green back in the pinstripes.

On Tuesday, Jon Morosi of the MLB Network broke the possibility of the Yankees trading to get Green back in the lineup. The analysis comes amid continued struggles for the Bronx Bombers bullpen.

"The Yankees are interested in a reunion with Chad Green, which makes sense on a number of levels: He’s having an excellent season in Toronto. He can close or pitch earlier leverage situations. He was a popular teammate in New York. He’s signed for 2025." - Jon Morosi

Ahead of the 2023 season, Chad Green signed a two-year, $8.5 million deal with the Toronto Blue Jays, where he remains. After a bumpy 2023 season, the South Carolina-born Green appears to have settled in. Green's pitching this year is a major factor contributing to the open-market interest in his arm.

In 28 games for Toronto this season, the 33-year-old Green is 2-2 with a 1.88 ERA in 29.2 innings and has only allowed two earned runs in his past six appearances.

Chad Green's best season with the New York Yankees was the 2017 campaign. In addition to going 5-0, Green tossed to a 1.83 ERA and acted primarily as a set-up man for then-Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman.

Despite being one of MLB's top pitching teams in 2023, Yankees arms have faltered in 2024. Over the past month, the Yankees have pitched to a 4.81 ERA, giving them MLB's fifth-worst earned run figure over that period.

Chad Green represents a strong bullpen addition

Along with the Yankees, the New York Mets have also been named as a possible destination for Green. As Thomas Hall recently wrote in Jays Nation:

"Even so, a big-market team like the New York Yankees — one of Green’s former employers — or the Los Angeles Dodgers may ultimately be most comfortable taking on future salary at this year’s trade deadline while others searching for bullpen help stick to the rental market."

The Yankees certainly have a lot to sort out when it comes to pitching. However, by nabbing a familiar arm like Green, GM Brian Cashman may be able to take a first step toward solving those woes.
