MLB games are full of surprises. While most of the action occurs on the field, there are times when the crowd can get involved as well. In 2010, a Philadelphia Phillies fan caused a stir with a vomiting attack, much to the dismay and disgust of other supporters in the stadium.

A 21-year-old New Jersey man was charged after he intentionally threw up on another fan and his 11-year-old daughter during a game against the Washington Nationals.

Matthew Clemmens, of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, was charged with three counts of harassment, disorderly conduct and simple assault for his behavior at Citizens Bank Park.

According to the victim, off-duty police captain Michael Vangelo, Clemmens and his friend began heckling and spitting at his older daughter once they took their seats.

When his daughter complained to security and Clemmens' friend was removed, Clemmens grew even more agitated. According to Vangelo, Clemmens said he would "put two fingers down his throat" and be sick.

"One guy started spitting ... first it landed on the back of my daughter's chair. Then it landed on her hooded sweatshirt," Vangelo said, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.
"It was the most vile, disgusting thing I've ever seen. He has two fingers down his throat, he lunges forward and vomits on myself and my 11-year-old."

Vangelo claimed that as he attempted to push his kids behind him so they would be safe, Clemmens hit him in the face. Vangelo reported that four or five spectators in the adjacent row rushed to assist.

Someone punched Clemmens in the face as he attempted to escape and detained him until police arrived.

Philadelphia Phillies' 2010 season

The 2010 season was the 128th in franchise history for the Phillies. The Phillies, who were two-time defending National League champions, won the National League East for the fourth consecutive season and had the best record in MLB. However, they fell to the San Francisco Giants in the NLCS after sweeping the Cincinnati Reds in the NLDS.
