What’s the story?

The West Bengal Basketball Association has been rocked with a molestation incident which allegedly happened during the recently organised National Junior Basketball Championships in Greater Noida. A member of junior women’s basketball team from West Bengal has alleged that she was molested by a well-known figure of the Indian basketball fraternity.

In case you didn’t know...

The incident happened while the West Bengal team was in Greater Noida for the National Junior Basketball Championships.

After the team returned from the national capital, a committee was formed by the state basketball association to investigate the matter. The victim while appearing before the committee revealed that she was molested in the metro.

The heart of the matter

Incidentally, some of the women’s team members had received sexually explicit and vulgar audio and video clippings on their mobiles. The victim alleged that she was molested in the metro while the team was taking a tour of the national capital.

The accused is a well known face in India’s basketball circuit and was a member of the Committee for Basketball Referees. He was accompanying his son, who is part of the Bengal junior men’s team, to the championships.

Since the incident has surfaced, the accused had gone undercover and has also changed his phone number.

Incidentally, the committee which was prepared to look into the matter, is yet to publish the report of the hearing.

What’s next?

The accused has been removed from the Committee for Basketball Referees while the president of the West Bengal Basketball Association, Shibaji Ghosh has said that further steps would be taken once the report of the committee is out. He went on to say that if anyone is found to be guilty, then a police complaint would be lodged against that person.

Author’s take

This is a shameful incident which has rocked India’s basketball fraternity. The guilty party should not be let off lightly because if that is done, more and more incidents like these will happen in future.
