Established in 1947 as Minneapolis Lakers, Los Angeles Lakers is one of the most successful American Basketball teams with 17 NBA championships to the name. It competes in the Western Conference Pacific Division and plays home matches at Staples Center. Earlier, Los Angeles Lakers won the 1948 NBL championship as a member of the NBL before joining the BAA (Basketball Association of America). During the 1980s, the team played magnificent basketball to clinch 5 championship titles in a 9-year duration. Magic Johnson


The former professional basketballer is often regarded as the greatest Point Guard of all time. The Los Angeles Lakers selected him in the first overall in the 1979 NBA draft. His NBA career started when he joined the Orlando Magic in 1992 and then played for the Los Angeles Lakers from 1996 to 2004.


Jim Pollard


Jim Clifford Pollard was a former American professional basketballer and coach, who was born in 1922 and died in 1993. During the 1950s, he was regarded as one of the best forwards which also earned him the nickname ‘The Kangaroo Kid’. The 5-time NBA champion spent his entire 8-year professional basketball career with the Minneapolis Lakers. Also, Pollard was a 4-time NBA All-Star, 2-time All-NBA First Team, and NBL champion.


George Mikan


Nicknamed ‘Mr. Basketball’, George Lawrence Mikan was a professional player with outstanding game skills and temperament. He witnessed an extremely successful basketball career with 5-time BAA/NBA champion, 2-time NBL champion, 4-time NBA All-Star, 2-time All-NBA First Team and many other accomplishments. His career spanned Chicago American gears (1946-47) and Minneapolis Lakers (1947-1954). Mikan also served the Minneapolis Lakers as a coach during 1957-58.

Los Angeles Lakers Coach


The former NBA player Darvin Ham Sr. is a professional basketball coach. Presently, he is the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA league. After playing college basketball, Darvin played eight NBA seasons from 1996 to 2005. Initially, Darvin Ham was appointed as an assistant coach for the Thunderbirds in 2018 and then served as a head coach. Later, Ham approached the Lakers in 2011 to hold the role of an assistant coach and also worked in the player (Pau Gasol, Kobe Bryant, and Dwight Howard) development role.


Darvin Ham joined the Atlanta Hawks’ coaching staff in 2013 to assist the team in reaching the playoffs in four seasons consecutively. He also contributed prominently to the coaching staff to earn the Atlanta Hawks a Division title in 2015. Darvin Ham was appointed as the head coach of the Lakers on June 3, 2022.


History


The history of the Los Angeles Lakers roots back to 1947. It began with the purchase of a disbanded team (Detroit Gems) of the National Basketball League for US$15,000. The franchise started playing as the Minneapolis Lakers in Minneapolis. Initially, the franchise won its first NBL title in 1948 before joining the rival BAA (Basketball Association of America). From 1960 onwards, the club was renamed as Los Angeles Lakers and won its first (total 6th) NBA title in 1972 under the new name. Till the 2021-22 NBA season, the team has won a total of 33 Division titles and 19 Conference titles, and 18 (NBL:1; NBA:17) championships.

Gerald Hatten Buss, the American businessman, investor, and philanthropist, owned the majority of stakes in the Los Angeles Lakers. He purchased the LAL of the NBA in addition to the hockey team (Los Angeles Kings) of the NHL. The Los Angeles Lakers registered a wonderful record under Buss’s ownership with a pool of remarkable players i.e. Shaquille O’Neal, James Worthy, Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, etc. After his demise in 2013, the ownership transferred to his six children under the Buss Family Trusts. Other minor owners of the franchise are Philip Anschutz, Edward P. Roski, and Patrick Soon-Shiong.
